The Bonduel High School boys basketball team lost the lead in the second half and fell 62-54 to Amherst in Central Wisconsin Conference-8 action Thursday night in Bonduel.
The Bears (3-3, 0-2 CWC-8) had a slim 30-26 lead at halftime as the Falcons (4-0, 2-0 CWC-8) got in early foul trouble. Amherst forward Tyler Biadasz came out of the game after two early fouls, giving Bonduel opportunities under the net.
Bonduel’s Zach Zernicke, a 6-foot-4 senior forward, had seven of his 12 points in the first quarter.
Amherst would have been in more trouble if not for the shooting of senior Hans Waldoch, who led the Falcons with 17 points, including nine in the first half. Amherst’s Garrett Groshek added a 3 just before halftime that cut the Bears’ lead from seven to four.
“We gave up the 3 and that kind of changed the momentum,” Bonduel coach Duke Copp said. “But we felt good. The kids have to play 32 minutes of tough basketball.”
“Hans is one of our seniors, and he kept us in it when we needed to be kept in it,” Amherst coach Scott Groholski said. “We were kind of walking on thin ice there in the first half. He hit some nice shots.”
The two teams remained close until Amherst built a small lead in the fourth quarter, going nine of 13 from the free-throw line.
“It was a great game,” Groholski said. “Two evenly matched teams. Defensively, Bonduel did a great job.”
Connor Rosin, a 6-foot-2 junior guard, led Bonduel with 13 points, including three 3-pointers. Hunter VanderLinden pitched in 10 points.
Copp said mistakes were the difference Thursday.
“We’re in for a battle every night,” Copp said. “We aren’t taking care of the ball and we’re missing shots.”
