“You gotta have heart, miles and miles of heart.” Frank Sinatra sings that song as only he can, and the message is to not give up, but to go for it.
With the Shawano-Menominee Relay for Life coming up March 22, it reminds me of all the people out there fighting for their lives against cancer. Talk about having heart. Join us from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. to walk around the Shawano Community High School gym in tune with some peppy music, visit the decorated booths (with a jungle theme this year), talk to master of ceremonies Bill Jartz, and buy a ticket for one of the great gift baskets in our raffle. You can also donate $10 for a luminaria in memory of someone who lost the battle. The luminaria bag will be decorated and have your loved one’s name on it. All are set in a circle around the gym and lit during a special ceremony. All money collected goes to the American Cancer Society for research for a cure.

The Box in the Wood Theatre Guild held its meeting on Feb. 3. Everyone there was an active member in every sense of the word, so discussions were animated. Mary Madsen, president, appointed two new board members: Sandra Wehmeyer and Nancy Powless.
Our large puppet, Audrey II, from “Little Shop of Horrors,” will be used in Abrams Spotlight Theatre’s production this April. Audrey II is the wonderful creation of guild members Cheryl Folkerts and Gayle Smoot, and was the focal point on our stage during Little Shop.
We are again planning our prop/costume shed sale in August. It was a first-time success last summer.

“The Dixie Swim Club” is our next production, on April 25-27 and May 2-4. Miriam Nelson is the director, assisted by Denise Riley. Auditions were held the first week in February, and I’ll give you the names of the five ladies who are in the cast next month. As I reported last month, this comedy is about five women who were on the swim team together in college and get together at a beach cottage every five years or so to catch up. The group is made up of a lawyer, a health nut, a “forever young” wannabe, a gal down on her luck, and a nun. Makes for some funny dialogue! If you want to be a part of the show on stage or backstage, call Miriam at 715-432-1202.
SCAC is sponsoring Ballet Backstage at 7 p.m. March 1 and 2 p.m. March 2 at the Shawano Community High School auditorium, not at the Mielke Arts Center. The dancers need a solid stage surface on which to dance, so the auditorium is perfect. Reserve your ticket via the telephone reservation line, 715-526-2525, or pick up your tickets at the Shawano Country Chamber of Commerce, Clintonville Chronicle or Wittenberg Enterprise offices. Adult tickets are $10; students $5. If you’re a member of the SCAC, show your card at the box office for a $1 discount.
