Nicki Meyers is a Girl Scout leader for Daisy Troop 2570.
A Shawano native, she graduated from Shawano Community High School. She earned a degree in interior decorating from Fox Valley Technical College and then a degree in nursing from Northeast Wisconsin Technical College. She works at Pine Manor in Embarrass.
Meyers and her husband, Jeremy, have two daughters, Kennedi, 7, and Kadence, 5. He is a journeyman welder at AZCO in Appleton and also teaches welding at College of Menominee Nation. The family lives in Shawano and enjoys ice fishing in the winter and camping and swimming up north in the summer.
Meyers is in the Hillcrest Primary School PTA and also helps the teachers when they ask her.
Q How did you get started in Scouts?
A “I’ve been doing it for two years. My oldest daughter wanted to join when she was in kindergarten and they needed a troop leader. I have Daisy Troop 2570. I was in Brownies when I was young.”
Q What does the troop do?
A “Last year, all the girls got their petals. I teach them how to be honest and fair, friendly and helpful, courageous and strong, respect authority, and use resources wisely, to name a few. I’m a crafty person. Right now, they are learning about the earth and different states. We just finished Wisconsin. Our community service project this year is making a Little Library, where there are free books for adults and children. There is one at the rec center. Last year, we did Easter baskets for Safe Haven and a food drive for the food pantry. We have a service project to help another country. We are collecting bottles, spoons, formula and soap to send to babies in Haiti. Last year, we sent soccer balls.”
Q How is the cookie sale going?
A “Right now, we have the Cookie Rally to teach the kids how to be safe and sell cookies and get them excited about the sale. They can take orders until March 14. There will be cookie booths to sell cookies from March 1-23 at businesses around town. There are eight different kinds, including the newest one, cranberry citrus.”
Q Why do you volunteer?
A “I love teaching and being with the kids. I see them grow and learn and teach them what they don’t learn in school. It’s a hands-on learning, going into the community and see what they can do to help. It‘s a service to my community to help the girls in our area.”
