Lisa Miller is the treasurer of the Home and School Association at Sacred Heart Catholic School in Shawano. She is also in the Booster Club.
Miller was born in Racine and raised in Milwaukee. After graduating from St. Mary’s Academy High School, she attended the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater for five years. In the summer of 1992, she got a summer job at the Mohican North Star Casino in Bowler as a blackjack dealer.
She still works at the casino — “Longest summer job I ever had,” Miller said. — but is now a revenue auditor.
Last summer Miller completed her associate degree in communications from UW-Whitewater.
Miller and her husband, Gerald, security manager at North Star, have been married for 12 years. They live in Gresham with their two children, Dakota and Tristan. The family enjoys camping, bowling and movies.
Q What is the Home and School Association?
A “Anybody who has students at Sacred Heart belongs and can come to the meetings. We fund raise to help support the school. There are probably 10 to 12 field trips a year where we pay the bus transportation. Each staff member of the school is given $100 for out-of-pocket expenses to help with the little things here and there. All the students go to Camp Tekawitha three times a year, and we pay part of the students’ cost. We took all the fundraising under our wing. Good things are happening.”
Q How do you raise money?
A “We have two fish fries every year in Lent. The first one is March 7 and the second one is April 11. We did a bowling fundraiser. That was a lot of fun. We had wreath sales at Christmas. We did bingo at the fair and got a portion of the proceeds. We are looking to have our own bingo this year. There is a license in the works and we hope to have our first bingo on March 22 at 5:30 p.m. in the cafeteria. We would like to do it quarterly. During Catholic Schools Week, we had a free spaghetti dinner and some gave donations, so we actually made a little money.”
Q Why do you volunteer?
A “I do it because I feel it’s part of education. Teachers have a huge job to do, and parents have to be part of it as well. Kids like to see their parents at school.”
