The Gillett School Board voted Thursday to hire NEOLA Policy Service to review, develop and update its policies and manuals to comply with state guidelines.
Superintendent Todd Carlson recommended the board approve a contract with Ohio-based NEOLA after a representative from the firm attended the Oct. 17 board meeting. Stu Waller explained how the company provides management options for school districts for school board policies and bylaws, administrative guidelines and procedures, and student, parent and staff handbooks.
The Gillett board has reviewed and updated its policies regularly, but Carlson said more policies need updating to comply with state guidelines.
“One way or another, you have to update your policies,” he said.
The service works with school boards in Florida, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin and West Virginia. Law firms from each state review the legal accuracy of the documents. While templates have been developed as formats, the district is free to customize the material.
The initial cost of the service is $7,750 and covers drafting, proofing, updating and printing of policies and manuals, and provides an electronic format available to the public. An annual cost of $900 covers two updates per year so the district is always current with changes from the state.
An adviser will meet with district officials to determine Gillett’s needs. The district plans to start the process immediately in order to have the updated policies in place for the next school year.
