The Cardboard Classic is a highlight of the year for fifth-graders at Oconto Falls Elementary School.
As part of a unit on physical science, students learn about concepts such as friction, force, inertia and momentum, along with design principles and problem-solving skills. Teams of students then apply these skills to create the fastest possible sled, using cardboard, glue, tape and other recyclable materials. The culminating activity is a series of races at the tubing hill in Oconto Falls.
This year, the winning sled was The Pink Bobsled, created by Brenna Morrissey, Kilyn Brabant, Jazmine Peters, Morgan Blazek and Destiny Rabe.
Fifth-grade teacher Lynda Foust coordinated the event, with the assistance of teachers Emily Robinson and Hannah Schullo and students’ parents. The Oconto Falls Lions Club opened the tubing hill and operated the tow rope for the contest.
