A roaring fire destroyed one business and left three families without a home in Tigerton the night of Aug. 16.
Tigerton firefighters were dispatched to The Crossroads Bar and Grill at 300 Cedar St. at about 6:31 p.m.
Upon arrival, fire crews encountered heavy smoke in the attic area. All individuals were safely evacuated prior to the department’s arrival, and no injuries were reported.
More than a dozen area departments were called to help as conditions deteriorated. The alarm eventually went to a fifth level for tankers to supply water to the scene.
The Red Cross is assisting the families, but details on what is needed for those left homeless have not been announced.
Several area businesses opened their doors to help provide food and drink to firefighters and other emergency personnel.
According to a statement from the Tigerton Fire Department, water source fill sites were set up in two locations to fill tankers to help supply water to the scene. Officials later said about 540,000 gallons of water were used to extinguish the blaze.
“The structure is a total loss, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation,” according to the fire department’s news release.
Fire departments assisting were Grant, Bowler, Wittenberg, Norwood, Rosholt, Bear Creek, Mattoon, Ringle, Hatley, Marion, Shawano, Navarino, Clintonville, Birnamwood, Pella, Gresham and Stockbridge-Munsee.
Also lending aid were Wittenberg Ambulance, Krause Towing, Shawano County Sheriff’s Department, Marion Police Department, Tigerton Area Ambulance and Meverden Excavation.
