Two candidates are competing for a seat on the Suring School Board: incumbent Eugene School Jr. and Erika Schindel. The winner of the April 1 election will represent the towns of Bagley, Maple Valley and Spruce.
Here are the candidates’ profiles.
Eugene School Jr.
Age: 55; born and raised in Suring, lived in Maple Valley 32 years
School-aged children: None; wife, siblings, two sons and daughter-in-law graduated from Suring High School; a granddaughter is in sixth grade
Education: Suring High School graduate
Employment: Maintenance manager for the past 15 years, Dimension Lumber Co., Suring
Experience: Suring School Board, 24 years; member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, served on the church board
Statement: “The decisions we make as a board are getting harder with all the changes in education and less money coming from the government. Suring has built a good fund balance, but the next few years are going to be tough. I would like to win re-election to try to save our fund balance, but I feel we are going to burn through our fund balance in a short period. We’ll have to ask the taxpayers, in a referendum, to help if we are to maintain our present programs for our students.”
Erika Olson Schindel
Age: 35, lifetime resident of the district
School-aged children: A daughter in fifth grade and son in first grade at Suring School
Education: Suring High School graduate, Northeast Wisconsin Technical College
Employment: Self-employed and direct sales
Experience: “I have not served on a board. I do, however, have a vested interest in the students, their education and activities. I am willing to put in the time and effort needed to improve our district on many levels.”
Statement: “I feel that if elected, I can bring a balance and perspective to the Suring School Board that it is currently lacking. I believe that our School Board needs more members with students enrolled in the district. My focus will be on what we can do with the funds that are available and not what we can’t do with money that is not there.”
