Today I would like to tell new residents about some of our existing ordinances. I would also like to explain where additional information can be found. For those of you who are not new to the community, perhaps you will appreciate a reminder regarding some of the regulations that exist.
Winter parking regulations are now in effect. No person shall park any vehicle on any street or alley between the hours of 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. of any weekday. On Saturdays and Sundays, the prohibited hours for parking are between 2:30 a.m. and 6 a.m. Parking is prohibited in municipal parking lots from 3-6 a.m. These regulations are in effect until March 15. If you are going to have overnight guests, please call the Shawano Police Department to request a special parking permit.
Property owners are reminded to clear sidewalks of snow within 24 hours after any given snowfall and to keep the entire sidewalk free of snow and ice. Failure to keep the sidewalks clear may subject the property owners to fines and charges for snow removal. In addition, property owners are reminded not to plow or blow snow from parking lots or driveways in to a street or alley. The city will remove snow deposited and bill the property owner for the cost of such removal.
Salt sand piles are located at the city lot on the 100 block of East Elizabeth Street, the parking lot behind the Community Hall, West Richmond Street by the Shawano dam, and on the corner of Second Street and North Washington Street. These salt sand piles are available for city residents to use free of charge.
There have been numerous reports of dogs and cats running at large. A dog or cat is considered to be running at large if it is off the premises of its owner and not under the restraint of the owner or some other person who has immediate care, custody or control. No person owning or having the responsibility of said dog or cat shall allow the animal to stray, run or in any manner exist at large on or upon any public street, sidewalk, public park or thoroughfare, or upon other person’s property without the consent of that property owner.
It is unlawful to abandon, within the city limits, any domesticated animal. Also, please remember to clean up after your dog to avoid receiving a citation.
Dogs and cats who are running at large or untagged or unidentified are subject to impoundment, and the owner is subject to a municipal citation. Complaints should be directed to the Police Department at 715-524-4545.
For your convenience, a variety of application forms are available on the city of Shawano website (www.shawanowi.govoffice2.com), including dog/cat license, cigarette license, beverage operators (bartenders) application, liquor license renewal (only available if you have a liquor license from the city of Shawano), soda license, amusement license, pawnbroker license and transient merchant license. There is also an application form available if you are interested in serving on a city committee/commission.
You will also find the Building Inspection Department page on the city of Shawano website. Our building inspector’s office hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday. The site also has information regarding building permits, building permit fee schedule, new or replacement roofing applications, electrical permit and fee schedule, heating-ventilating-air-conditioning permits and fee schedule, plumbing permits and fee schedules, fence permits, swimming pools and fencing, sewer permit, and sign permits and fee schedules.

Taxi ticket booklets are available for elderly (60+) and disabled adults. Books of tickets can be purchased at City Hall. Booklets cost $17.50 and contain 10 tickets. We still have several 2013 booklets left (expires Dec. 1); the 2014 booklets will be available after Jan. 1.
