Citing a need to spend more time with her family, Dawn Larsen has resigned as head softball coach at Oconto Falls High School. In a March 3 email, she thanked school officials for their support, saying she enjoyed her career at Oconto Falls.
Larsen’s resignation comes one year after she successfully campaigned to be reinstated by the School Board, which originally declined to offer her a contract for the 2013 season, based on the recommendation of the high school principal.
Larsen’s 2013 contract included guidelines for conduct that reflected stipulations of a letter of reprimand she received after yelling at a player at a softball game in May 2012.
Superintendent Dave Polashek said Dawn’s daughter, McKenna, requires surgery for an injured hand. It is uncertain if the Panthers’ all-conference pitcher will play this season.
The School Board on Monday named Rochell Otto as head coach.
Athletic Director Jerry Moynihan said Larsen’s resignation means the school district is losing a good coach.
“It will make it a challenge for the rest of the team, but I think Rochell is up to it,” he said.
Moynihan said the assistant position vacated by Otto will be filled within a week. Softball practices begin Monday. Otto is a physical education teacher at Oconto Falls Elementary School and a longtime assistant softball coach.
The School Board also named Tammy Moynihan as head girls track coach. She has coached for 17 years but was hesitant to coach for the 2014 season. She said decided to return “for the girls and the program.”
