JoAnn Schabell, 78, of Bonduel, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 2, 2019, at her home. JoAnn was born in Forestville, Door County, on June 12, 1941, daughter of the late Clarence and Hazel (Miekle) Lau. JoAnn graduated from Green Bay West High School.
On Nov. 7, 1970, she was united in marriage to Clarence V. “Sonny” Schabell in Green Bay. Sonny preceded JoAnn in death in 2011.
JoAnn worked as a nurse at Brown County Mental Health Facility, at Evergreen Nursing Home and at Meadow View Estates Nursing Home. She and Sonny were entrepreneurs and they owned and operated numerous businesses, they ran Cecil Sport Shop in Cecil and then Sport Shop and Repair in Bonduel before retiring.
They were avid snow mobile riders in their younger years and they enjoyed being very involved in the community. JoAnn enjoyed knitting, sewing, and crocheting. She was a wonderful cook and always cooked to feed an army. She enjoyed trips to the casino to play bingo. JoAnn was a wonderful mother and grandmother and dedicated herself and her life to helping others.
JoAnn is survived by six daughters, Sandy (Mike) Groth, of Shawano, Julie (Russ) Maufort, of Appleton, Cyndi Mastey, of Shiocton, Tammy Horsens, of Shawano, Robyn (Todd) Yancy, of Bonduel, and Holly (fiancé Scott Karcz) Heller, of Pulaski; two special daughters, Melanie (Darren) Schwartz, of Minnesota, and Kay (Joe) Hottenstine, of Bonduel; grandchildren, Michelle, Miranda, Justin, Nicole, Nathan, Courtney, Kayla, Hayley, Matthew, Maxwell, Ashley, Amber, Adam and Aspen; great-grandchildren, Carter, Tucker, Johnny, Nicolas, Jackie, Mason, Brooklyn, Willow, Adaline and Jameson; and one sister, Diane (Roger) Burt of Marinette. She is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a grandson, Steven Maufort; her parents; and siblings, Lester Martin, Jerry Martin, Helen Martin, Edna Mae Lau, and Evelyn Mae Lau.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2020, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bonduel. Entombment will be in Fort Howard Mausoleum in Green Bay. Visitation will be held at Swedberg Wendt Funeral Home in Bonduel on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2020, from 4-8 p.m. and again at the church on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.
