The day and time of the annual Shawano Country Chamber of Commerce Fall and Homecoming Parade will be changed due to conflicting schedules with another downtown event, Oktoberfest.
Previously held on Saturday morning, the parade this year will shift to 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4. This year’s parade theme is “Nautical” in recognition of the Shawano Community High School homecoming football game with Marinette.
“Once we realized homecoming was scheduled for the same day as Oktoberfest, we quickly met with SCHS Athletic Director Tim Mayer and Superintendent Todd Carlson to come up with a solution,” said Nancy Smith, Shawano Country Chamber of Commerce executive director.
“There are a lot of athletic and homecoming events that needed to be taken into consideration,” Smith said. “They did a great job of working through their schedule and coming up with the best solution possible and moving the parade to Friday evening.”
The parade travels up Main Street, which would be impossible Saturday during Oktoberfest, when the street is filled with vendors and games.
Entries are currently being accepted for the parade, and participants are encouraged to decorate their entries with the Nautical theme. Trophies will be awarded for the Best of the Parade (Mayor’s Trophy), Business Entry, Club /Organization Entry, High School Entry, and Kindergarten through Eighth Grade School Entry.
To include your entry in the parade, call the chamber at 715-524-2139 or stop by the chamber office, 1263 S. Main St., Shawano, to pick up an entry form.
Parade participants will line up on Elizabeth Street beginning at 5 p.m. They should enter the staging area off of Lincoln Street. The parade route starts at the corner of Elizabeth and Main streets, proceeds north on Main Street, turns left at Green Bay Street, left on Washington and ends at the old Franklin School property.
