‘Godspell’ kicks off ASPI’s 2025 season

Looking ahead to 2025, Abrams Spotlight Productions Inc. will present a musical, a comedy and a Christmas-themed youth show at the Nancy Byng Community Theater, 5852 Maple St., Abrams. The three shows are “Godspell” in March, “The Play that Goes Wrong” in May and “A Ghost Tale for Mr. Dickens Jr.” in December. “Godspell,” directed by Elizabeth Jolly-Haslitt, will be performed March 13-23. The musical is based on the Gospel of Matthew, with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz — who also composed the music for “Wicked” and “Pippin.” Using a blend of parables, songs, games and tomfoolery, Jesus’ life plays out onstage. In this New Age production, Jesus’ message of kindness, tolerance and love shines vibrantly. Pre-sale tickets are now available for purchase by Spotlight Sponsors and season ticket holders. For the general public, tickets go on sale Jan. 13. “The Play that Goes Wrong,” directed by Mike Eserkaln, will be performed May 8-18. The comedy describes the inept and accident-prone Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society’s attempt to produce an ambitious 1920s murder mystery. Unfortunately, the set is not yet complete, the props start to disappear, actors go missing and the set begins to collapse. Mayhem ensues, the acting gets worse and the set becomes increasingly dangerous. The question is whether any of the cast and crew will remain standing, or conscious, by the final curtain. “A Ghost Tale for Mr. Dickens Jr.” is a youth show directed by Bobby Buffington, presented Dec. 4-14, 2025. The show is an adaptation of a book in Mary Pope Osborne’s award-winning fantasy adventure series “Magic Tree House.” In this Christmas story, Jack and Annie’s treehouse takes them to the foggy streets of Victorian London. Here they learn the importance of charity and kindness through their friendship with legendary author Charles Dickens, who is suffering from a severe case of writer’s block. While Jack and Annie witness the hardships faced by the poor and Mr. Dickens is haunted by sad memories of his own, they inspire Mr. Dickens to write one of the greatest holiday stories of all time. This musical puts a unique twist on a famous holiday tale. Season tickets are on sale now at a discounted price for all three shows: $51 for adults and $45 for senior citizens, youth and military veterans. Season ticket holders have a chance to reserve their tickets before the general public and can choose their seats for each show. To purchase tickets, call the box office at 920-826-5852 or visit abramstheater.com. ASPI recently wrapped up its 21st season with sold-out performances of “Seussical the Musical,” a successful Giving Tuesday campaign and a profitable online auction. The community theater is continuing its Light the Way campaign to raise $25,000 to replace its theatrical lighting. Donations of any size are appreciated at abramstheater.com.
