Five individuals have filed as candidates for two open positions on the Gillett School Board. The primary election on Tuesday will reduce the field to four candidates for the April 1 election.
Candidates submitted the following information about themselves.
Nanette Mohr
Age: 67
Years in Gillett School District: 48
Education: Gillett High School graduate, 1964
Employment: Landlady for Nanette Mohr Rentals
Experience in School Board or related leadership: In April 2014, I will complete my 18th year on the Gillett School Board. Currently, I am School Board clerk.
What major issues are facing the Gillett School District, and how will you work to resolve them? Assist in preparing our district for the many, upcoming changes required by the Department of Public Instruction. This includes the Common Core Standards, Smarter Balance Assessment and the School Report Card. We need to develop partnerships to share costs with other districts, Northeast Wisconsin Technical College and Cooperative Educational Services Agency (CESA) to maintain programming to provide the classes students need and want.
Brandon Lee Nygaard
Age: 21
Years in Gillett School District: 21
Education: Graduate of Gillett High School, 2010; NWTC, 2010-2012 in the heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration technology department
Employment: Service technician with Knope Roofing and Furnace Company in Shawano
Experience in School Board or related leadership: Line Officer, Shawano Lodge No. 170 F&AM
What major issues are facing the Gillett School District, and how will you work to resolve them? To see the Gillett School District be recognized as the best around, giving our students the best possible education with the resources available. Taking advantage of all state, federal and private funds/grants available, without putting a further burden on property taxpayers. With the current administration working with an open-minded and diverse School Board, this could be achieved. I would like the opportunity to serve.
Jamie Heroux
Age: 40
Years in Gillett School District: 14
Education: Graduate of Coleman High School, 1991; Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering, Michigan Technological University, 1995
Employment: Electrical project engineer at Paper Converting Machine Company in Green Bay
Experience in School Board or related leadership: This would be my first opportunity to serve my community as a School Board member. I have served as a trustee at my church and have worked in multiple collaborative team environments as part of my employment.
What major issues are facing the Gillett School District, and how will you work to resolve them? The greatest challenge is providing the best educational experience for all students in the district with the resources available. The GOAL and CRE8 charters are up for renewal during the term of the candidates elected. The board should evaluate if they are meeting their charters and what is best for the district. I will work toward informed decisions to use resources in the most effective manner for student education.
John Timm
Age: 48
Years in Gillett School District: 48
Education: Gillett High School graduate
Employment: Owner/operator of Timm Farms
Experience in School Board leadership or other related experience: Elected to the Gillett School Board in 2011, member of the Oconto County Fair Board for 19 years
What major issues are facing the Gillett School District, and how will you work to resolve them? The major issue facing the Gillett School District, like most households in the district, is trying to do more with less. This means money and resources. I will do my best to be fiscally responsible. Tough decisions will have to be made, and changes may need to occur, but I will always keep the citizens’ and students’ best interest at heart.
Paul Herzog
Age: 35

Education: Gillett High School graduate, technical diploma in welding from NWTC, currently taking classes through Grand Canyon University for a bachelor’s degree in elementary and special education
Employment: Bus driver and mechanic at James Transport
Experience in School Board leadership or other related experience: Served as president of both the Gillett FFA Alumni and the Gillett/Suring Youth Wrestling Club, board member of Gillett Youth Football
What major issues are facing the Gillett School District and how will you work to resolve them? The education of students in the Gillett School District, or any district for that matter, will always be a major issue, as well as school policies. I think that the curriculum needs to be looked at closely and examined to see if it is really the best option for our students. School policies should also be reviewed and amended as needed. We also need to get and keep the best educators we can for our students.
