Not only will people learn about Egypt during the 2014 World Day of Prayer, they also will have a chance to taste traditional Egyptian food.
“The neat part about it is you learn about different countries,” said Geri Van De Loo, who is in charge of Friday’s event at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 302 S. Main St., in Shawano. It will be hosted by the Sacred Heart Council of Catholic Women.
World Day of Prayer USA promotes equality and justice through prayer, partnerships, service and celebration.
The first organized Day of Prayer was held on Jan. 9, 1920, in Canada, and it was first observed in the United States on Feb. 20, 1920. Women, men, youth and children all over the world in 170 countries now gather on the first Friday in March for a worship service written by the selected country for that year.
This year the program, “Streams in the Desert,” has been prepared by the women of Egypt.
“Sacred Heart is honored to host the celebration and invites everyone to attend,” Van De Loo said.
Van De Loo is the narrator for this year’s program, which also includes her daughter, Debbie Lonick, as a Samaritan woman and her son-in-law, James Lonick, as Jesus.
“The World Day of Prayer is a great way to start out the Lenten journey,” Van De Loo said. “It’s always an energizing experience getting together with people of all faiths.”
Other churches involved are St. Martin Catholic in Cecil, Salem United Methodist in Red River, Zion Lutheran in Shawano and United Methodist in Shawano.
The program begins with registration at 9:30 a.m. Friday followed by the service at 10 a.m. The service is one to two hours. Refreshments include hummus and veggies, pita bread, cookies, coffee and juice.
