Edward “Ed” Skarban, 86, Two Rivers, formerly of Oconto Falls, died Thursday morning, Dec. 5, 2013, at Hamilton Care Center. He was born Nov. 24, 1927, in Suring to Edward J. and Louise (Yakel) Skarban.
Following graduation from high school in 1945, he entered the U.S. Navy and served during World War II. Following his honorable discharge from the military, he attended college in Milwaukee for two years.
On Nov. 1, 1951, he married Genevieve Baranski in Indiana. The couple in 1953 moved back to Oconto Falls, where Ed worked for the former Scott Paper Co. as an electrician for 37 years, retiring in 1989. It was also during this time he and Genevieve owned and operated the Fireside Restaurant.
On May 6, 1989, he married Lou Richard-Carroll, and the couple lived in Oconto Falls until moving to Two Rivers in 2010. The couple enjoyed entertaining family and friends at their cottage on the Oconto River, where their grandchildren learned to fish and enjoy pontoon boat rides.
While living in Oconto Falls, Ed played saxophone in area polka bands for many years. As an avid hunter and fisherman, Ed traveled out west to Montana for 40 years in the fall of the year to hunt and to Canada for numerous fishing trips.
He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, where he once sang in the Sanctuary Singers Choir. Ed also belonged to the AARP and the Oconto Falls American Legion Post No. 302, and held a lifetime membership in the North American hunting and fishery organizations.
Survivors include his wife, Lou Carroll-Skarban, Two Rivers; one daughter, Jackie Valley, Green Bay; Lou’s children, Connie (Mike) Ronk, New Berlin, Chris (Pete) Meinholz, Stevens Point, Colleen (Dale) Graham, Oconto Falls, Edward Carroll, Clarksville, Tenn., and Michael “Mick” (Julie) Carroll, Suamico; 15 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren; one sister, Joanne Monfort, Kelly Lake; and one sister-in-law, Delores Skarban, Milwaukee.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife in 1988; one brother, Robert Skarban; one sister, Mary Flynn; one nephew, John Skarban; two stepdaughters, Fran and Rose; and brother-in-law, Jim Monfort.
Visitation was held Monday, Dec. 9, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Oconto Falls. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Monday at the church with the Rev. Joel Sember officiating. Entombment took place at Nicolet Memorial Gardens, Green Bay.
