Donald J. Kern, 79, town of Elderon, died Tuesday, July 23, 2013, at Aspirus Wausau Hospital. He was born on Oct. 27, 1933, in DeWitt County, Ill., the son of the late Theodore and Martha (Nettles) Kern. Donald was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in the Korean War. On June 30, 1956, Donald was united in marriage to Laura Hart in Sidney, Mont. She preceded him in death on May 5, 1985. Don drove truck and also farmed in the town of Elderon for many years. He was very well-respected as a farmer and for his superior beef cattle. Don was a member of Elderon Memorial VFW Post 8068, Elderon. He enjoyed playing cards, working on farm machinery, his dogs and visiting with his friends and family. Survivors include his fiancé and longtime companion, Marilyn Mulhollan; four daughters, Carol Zoromski, Rhinelander, Linda (Barry) Myers, Rosholt, Janet (Dan) Kranski, Rosholt, and Sue (Leo) Johnson, Manawa; one son, Donnie E. (Kalie) Kern, Somerset; 14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Marjorie Kern, Springfield, Ill., Nadine Elder, Decatur, Ill., and Natalie (Al) Boehn, North Carolina. He is also survived by other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents and wife, Don was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Tiffany Myers; one great-grandson, Austin Kranski; and one brother, Paul Kern. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 27, 2013, at the New Horizon’s Methodist Church, Wittenberg. The Rev. Larry Olson will officiate. Interment will be in St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, Wittenberg, with military rites conducted by Elderon Memorial VFW Post 8068. Visitation will be on Friday from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Schmidt & Schulta Funeral Home, Wittenberg, and on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of services at the church.
