Youth sparks are an essential ingredient of thriving in the 4-H world. Having a spark gives a young person a sense of direction and encourages goal setting.
Nineteen Shawano 4-H members exhibited their sparks around food preparation and presentation at the 2022 Foods Revue, held May 14 at the Richmond Town Hall. Youth exhibited a prepared food with a completed place setting for critique from local judges. The Shawano 4-H Foods Revue Committee typically presents a hands-on educational activity for youth. This year, the committee invited Shawano Dairy Promotions to bring activities focused on the theme: “Just Say Cheese!”
Shawano Dairy Promotions guided youth to try different types of cheeses, from Gouda to cheddar. Each family received information on how to create a charcuterie board at home and also made a cheese board to take home. The cheese selection hailed locally from Oak Grove Dairy and Belle Plaine Cheese Factory. Youth also enjoyed creating their own specialty grilled cheese sandwiches. Some add-ins included pesto, pizza sauce, pepperoni, salsa, ham, taco meat and raisins.
Shawano County Dairy Promotions is a group of local dairy producers in Shawano County, with a goal to promote the dairy industry and its products.
4-H is a community of young people across America who are learning leadership, citizenship and life skills. In 4-H, young people make new friends, develop new skills, become leaders and help shape their communities.
