The Shawano School Board gave its unanimous approval Monday to a $23,800 bid by W.J. Woodruff Roofing to fix the roof at Shawano Community High School.
The company, based in Fond du Lac, is expected to start work later this week or next week to patch the roof, which should last for at least five years.
School officials urged the board to consider planning to completely replace the roof of the school, which was constructed in 1997.
Jeff Easter, the district’s maintenance director, said Industrial Roofing Service, based in Butler, did an assessment of the roof recently and determined there are still a few years remaining before patch jobs are no longer enough.
“At the beginning of this year, I had budgeted $30,000 in the maintenance budget because this was something I had anticipated happening,” Easter said. “This is well within my budget.”
Easter said he contacted three roofing companies that he had worked with to submit bids. He explained that he went with companies with a prior history because the last repair job, done in 2011 by a company that previously had not worked with the district, was already showing signs of failing.
Easter described W.J. Woodruff as a “good, reputable company.” He said that the company should be able to start on the project soon despite the colder weather, but that full completion might not occur until the spring.
Board member Marcia Yeager urged Easter to update the board during the work, which she agreed was necessary.
“I like the fact that he dealt with these people and he’s seen their work quality,” Yeager said. “It wasn’t just word of mouth. That’s why I felt comfortable.”
