Anvelink drives through traffic to Late Model win

The Late Model battle for the track championship got a little tighter Saturday night as Nick Anvelink’s feature win moved him to within 15 points of leader Ron Berna. Matt Oreskovich won the IMCA Modified feature, while Brandon Czarapata won another IMCA Stock Car feature. Joey Taycher came out on top in the IMCA Northern SportMod feature, and Jasper Drengler won the Mighty 4’s feature. Shawano Late Models Derek Janke jumped out to the quick lead over Doug Blashe, Tim Rothe, Jeff Curtin and Joel Bennett in the Late Model feature. Janke held the lead for the next eight laps as Anvelink was working his way through traffic. Also during that time Janke was engaged in a battle with Blashe and Bennett for the top spot. Blashe took the lead for part of lap 8 but drifted high in corner four giving the lead back to Janke. Anvelink took the lead on the next lap, with Blashe following. Once in front Anvelink pulled out to a comfortable lead. Bennett caught Blashe and took the runner-up spot with five laps remaining. Anvelink led the rest of the way to take the win over Bennett, Troy Springborn, Blashe and Tom Naeyaert. IMCA Modifieds Oreskovich took the lead from Derek Kozak on the fifth lap of the IMCA Modified feature. Marcus Yarie and Jason Czarapata weren’t far behind, moving into the second and third spots. The top three cars raced bumper-to-bumper midway through the race. Czarapata then pulled to the inside of Oreskovich in an effort to take the lead. Oreskovich held him off, leaving Czarapata to battle with Yarie. Yarie took the second spot and challenged for the lead with five laps remaining. Yaries’ car didn’t stick, though, as he spun, bringing out the caution. Oreskovich was up to the challenge the rest of the way taking the win over Czarapata, Jerry Wilinski, Brad Rohloff and Jerry Muenster. IMCA Stock Cars Luke Uttecht led the first three laps of the IMCA Stock Car feature when Mike Schmidt took the lead. Schmidt held the lead for four laps before being overtaken by Brandon Czarapata for the top spot. Rod Snellenberger followed Czarapata a couple of laps later. There was no catching Czarapata as he cruised to the win over Snellenberger, Mitch Stankowski, Schmidt and Dan Michonski. Northern SportMod The first eight laps of the IMCA Northern SportMod feature was plagued by five cautions. When the race resumed on lap nine, Clint Forstner maintained his lead over Jordan Barkholtz, Cody Hudson, Taycher and Jason Jach. Hudson moved to second on the next lap with Taycher following him one lap later. Taycher disposed of Hudson three laps later and pulled alongside Forstner on the next lap. It took only one lap for Taycher to get by Forstner to take the top spot. Hudson moved to second with four laps remaining but couldn’t catch Taycher. Taycher got the win over Hudson, Cody Hokenstad, Forstner and Barkholtz. Mighty 4s Drengler took the lead from Grant Kastning on the seventh lap of the Mighty 4s feature. Drengler led the rest of the way on his way to the win. He was followed by Kastning, Brade Wedde, Jeff Behm and Kasey Gross. Racing resumes at the speedway at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. There are only two weeks of racing left at Shawano Speedway this year.
