Alice E. Black

Alice E. Black, 63, of Shawano, passed away Friday, Aug. 16, 2013, at her home in Shawano. Born on Aug. 24, 1949, in Shawano, she was the daughter of Mary E. “Jean” (Hickey) Black and the late John C. Black. Alice attended Sacred Heart School, Franklin Middle School and Shawano Senior High School, graduating with the Class of 1967. After high school, Alice attended St. Norbert College, earning her bachelor’s degree in English in three years. Upon graduating in 1970, she was accepted and attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s English master’s program. Later Alice worked at the music library on the UW campus. Alice later returned to Shawano where she resided until her death. Alice is survived by her mother, Mary “Jean”; two sisters, Mary (Tom) Callum, of Wheaton, Ill., and Margaret LaFond, of Madison; four brothers, John Black Jr., of Appleton, Charles Black, of Pelican Lake, Joseph Black, of Shawano, and Tim (Lori) Black, of Shawano; and several nieces and nephews. Alice was preceded in death by her father, attorney John C. Black, and a sister-in-law, Mary Black. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shawano with the Rev. Luke Ferris officiating. Visitation will be held at the church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery. Due to Alice’s love of books, a memorial fund will be established for the Sacred Heart School Library.
