Agnes Ann Gilles, 85, resident of the MeadowLands, Oconto Falls, formerly of Lena, passed away Friday, Dec. 13, 2013, with family members by her side.
Agnes was born Sept. 16, 1928, to Francis Gilles Sr. and Ann (Maloney) Gilles in Lena, the youngest of six children. Her mother died when Agnes was 3, leaving Francis with six children. A few years later Francis married Susan Lisowe.
Agnes eventually became the big sister of four more brothers. She was a loyal and supportive sister, aunt and friend, always there for major life events. She rarely missed a graduation, wedding or funeral, making the trip home whenever she was needed.
Agnes loved to travel, enjoyed crafts and created countless, beautifully decorated cakes for family and friends on occasions such as births, graduations, retirements, weddings, etc.
She graduated from Mount Sinai School of Nursing, Milwaukee, in July 1947 and trained as a nurse anesthetist at Minneapolis School of Anesthesia. Agnes worked in Oregon before moving to Texas, where she served as a nurse anesthetist at St. Joseph Hospital of Fort Worth until her retirement.
Surviving are brothers, Merne, Lena, Mark (June), Sanford, N.C., Richard (Shirley), Lena, and Leo (Rosalyn), Oconto; sisters-in-law, Geri Gilles and Clayton Alsteen, Lena; as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Francis Sr. and Ann Gilles; stepmother, Susan (Lisowe) Gilles; sister, Mary Gilles; brothers, John, Francis, Joseph and Robert Gilles; sisters-in-law, May, Claire, Betty and Sis Gilles; friend, Polly Sizemore; niece, Diane Uphill; and nephews, Robert and Ray Gilles.
Relatives and friends may call at St. Anne Catholic Church, 221 E. Main St., Lena, Saturday, Dec. 21, from 9 a.m. until the time of the memorial Mass at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Celestine Byekwaso officiating.
The family would like to thank the staff at the MeadowLands for the special care given to Agnes, as well as Heartland Hospice, Dr. Cupino, Father Joel and Father Celestine.
