Abrams Spotlight Productions Inc. will close their 10th anniversary season with a performance of one of the world’s most beloved shows, “The Sound of Music.” The musical marks the final collaboration between Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II.
When a postulant proves too high-spirited for religious life, she is dispatched to serve as governess for the seven children of a widowed naval captain. Her growing rapport with the youngsters, coupled with her generosity of spirit, gradually captures the heart of the stern captain, and they marry. Upon returning from their honeymoon they discover that Austria has been invaded by the Nazis, who demand the captain’s immediate service in their navy. The family’s narrow escape over the mountains to Switzerland on the eve of World War II provides one of the most thrilling and inspirational finales ever presented in the theater. The motion picture version remains the most popular movie musical of all time.
Opening night is Friday, Dec. 6, at The Byng Community Theater, 5852 Maple St., Abrams. The 7 p.m. show will include an opening night gala, and complimentary hors d’oeuvres and drinks will be served after the show. “The Sound of Music” will also be performed at 1 and 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7 and Dec. 14; 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8 and 15; and 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13.
Tickets are $12 for adults ages 18-64, $10 for senior citizens 65 and older and youth ages 5-17, and $5 for children 4 and under. Tickets may be purchased online at www.AbramsTheatre.com or by calling the box office at 920-826-5852.
