Twig’s Beverage is known for its amazing glass-bottle sodas, including the signature Sun Drop drinks, as well as its museum dedicated to soda. This October, it might get a reputation for its swinging parties, as well.

Progress seen on redevelopment, housing project

Progress is being seen toward filling two long-empty businesses at the west city limits of Oconto Falls, and a potential affordable housing complex is also taking shape, the city council learned at its Sept. 10 meeting.

City Administrator Peter Wills said he and Fire Chief Tim Magnin recently gained access to the interior of the former Mobil station and convenience store at 710 County Road B for a fire inspection and found it in “reasonably good condition.”

Magnin said they found some code violations but found the building is in better shape than they expected.

Prep work continues on proposed solar farm

Behind-the-scenes work continues for the proposed solar farm in Shawano County, according to an official with National Grid Renewables.

Mike Rosenow, solar and storage project developer with the Bloomington, Minnesota-based company, told the Shawano County Public Property Committee on Sept. 12 the next step is determining the interconnection costs.

“That’s going to be the big one,” he said.

Repaving project brings smiles to Shawano Pathways

This past spring’s repaving project on County Road HHH from Green Bay Street to Gumaer Road was a blessing for many.

For Greg Sturm and Shawano Pathways, it was the culmination of years of work.

Sturm, who retired in 2008, is among the founders of Shawano Pathways, which was created in 2009.

“Some of our roads were so dangerous, particularly Airport Road with no shoulders and heavy traffic,” he said.

County job vacancies may lead to contracted services

Shawano County has been hit hard trying to fill vacant positions, and now those difficulties have extended to the custodial staff.

Steve Dreher, director of facilities and grounds, told the Shawano County Public Property Committee on Sept. 12 he is still short two of five custodians and the three remaining are facing burnout.

“We’re getting applicants, but none of them are worth anything,” he said. “We had a really good candidate that we interviewed, and she ended up taking another position.”
