Shawano County clerk of courts retires

Shawano County Clerk of Court Susan Krueger retired on Friday after 45 years with the county and 29 years in the clerk of court job.

Krueger said the decision to retire came after long consideration.

“Looking back over those years and recalling where I started and where I will end made this decision difficult,” she said.

Krueger started in the clerk of court’s office in 1975 as a receptionist/secretary and was deputized within that first year by Circuit Judge Gordon Myse, of Appleton.

Recent proceedings in Shawano-Menominee County Circuit Court:

• Lauren A. Mendez, 30, of Shawano, was charged Jan. 29 with two felony counts of bail jumping. She could face a maximum six years in prison and $10,000 fine on each count if convicted. She was scheduled for an initial court appearance on Jan. 30.

Oconto County Veterans’ records to be digitized

OCONTO — A Wausau firm has been hired to digitize hundreds of thousands of Oconto County veterans’ records dating back more than a century.

The County Board voted 29-1 Thursday to approve a contract with Q Solutions to scan about 9,900 folders containing an estimated 385,000 paper documents of county veterans who served as far back as the Spanish-American War and World War I.

“The purpose of this is to preserve the historical value, properly secure and safeguard the records and improve the efficiency in our office,” Veterans Service Officer Ron Christensen told the board.

Lakewood DNR station has new conservation warden

A Michigan native who served the country in military deployments to Somalia and Haiti before starting his law enforcement career is the new state conservation warden based at Lakewood in Oconto County.

Jamin Leuzzo, born and raised in the Upper Peninsula Michigan town of Bessemer, was hired by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources’ Bureau of Law Enforcement in late 2018 to serve the public as a conservation warden assigned to the Peshtigo Warden Team.

Damian Lee Murphy, 18, Abrams, pleaded not guilty to homicide by negligent operation of a motor vehicle in the Aug. 14 crash that killed Albert W. Reppert, 71, of Midlothian, Illinois. A pretrial conference was scheduled for March 19.

Jason L. Mulikin, 44, Kingsford, Michigan, pleaded guilty to possession with intent to deliver methamphetamine, in connection with an incident that occurred Sept. 9. Judge Michael T. Judge scheduled sentencing for March 27 and ordered a presentence investigation.

Tribe planning park at Keshena Falls

SHAWANO — There might not be hills around Shawano Community High School, but the area will still be alive with “The Sound of Music.”

The school’s drama and music programs will come together next week and present the real-life story of the Von Trapp Family Singers, a worldwide sensation that performed prior to the beginning of World War II. The story hit the big screen in 1967 in a Walt Disney film starring Julie Andrews.

For director Alex Konen, it’s a story he’s eager to let students tell to local residents and visitors alike.

BIRNAMWOOD — For Lisa Glapinski, it was a godwink moment — something that’s put in place and a person has to act on it — that brought about the sale of the local coffeehouse from one woman looking to retire to another woman looking for something to do in her retirement.

Judi Hegewald had a vision of starting up a small restaurant serving a variety of coffees and a small sandwich menu and opened up shop in May 2017.
