Oconto Falls hospital sets visitor restrictions during flu season

OCONTO FALLS — In response to an increase of flu cases in the region, visitor restrictions are now in place at all HSHS – Eastern Wisconsin Division hospitals, including HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital in Oconto Falls.

The restrictions also affect HSHS St. Vincent and HSHS St. Mary’s in Green Bay, and HSHS St. Nicholas in Sheboygan.

Restrictions are as follows:

· No visitors under the age of 12 in inpatient areas.

· No visitors of any age with flu-like symptoms including fever, sore throat, cough, runny nose, fever, vomiting or diarrhea.

KESHENA — Rae Gatz and her husband, Tim, have spent 20 years caring for her sister, who has Down syndrome, on the reservation. But their care efforts became really complicated about a year and a half ago when the sister started to show signs of dementia, as well.

“We got some information from the dementia specialists up here about what we can do to make her adjust in our home,” Gatz said. “Eventually, we couldn’t handle it at home because we weren’t equipped to take care of her, and so we put her in a place in Green Bay.”

Tiny house project comes to WBHS

WITTENBERG — Caleb McPhail, the new technology education and woodworking teacher at Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School, found a project that gives students the opportunity to learn several aspects of the construction trades industry.

Building a tiny house is a year-long project that will be a hands-on experience for about 35 students, encompassing different classes.

Wittenberg Telephone Co. adds more fiber optic cable

WITTENBERG — Wittenberg Telephone Company and its subsidiary Cirrinity are in the third year of an eight-year project to offer fiber optic broadband connections in the area.
According to CEO Scott Nyman, the company has already laid 106 miles of cable. The area covered is between Galloway to Elderon, the whole village of Eland, rural areas toward County Road OO and state Highway 29 and east of Eland toward Shepley. Those projects are ongoing.

Also added this year was the village of Birnamwood. WTC is connecting to homes instead of to just cell towers.

Winter Whirl returns to Clintonville

CLINTONVILLE — The annual Winter Whirl sponsored by the Clintonville Parks and Recreation Department will be held Jan. 18 at Memory Lanes Bar and Grill, 250 County Road I, Clintonville.

“Donations are still being accepted for the event, and sponsors will be recognized at the event and on the Facebook page,” said Justin McAuly, park and recreation director.

From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the 31st Annual Tummy Warmer Cook-off will be held. There will be activities for the kids, and vendors during that time.

At 11 a.m. there will be music by ”Grayling — A One Man Band.”

Walmart sues city over property assessment

The city of Shawano is the latest municipality to get hit with a civil suit by the real estate arm of Wal-Mart Inc. over property valuations assessed on their big box stores.

Wal-Mart Real Estate Business Trust filed suit against the city on Dec. 26 asking that the court lower the property value placed on its Shawano store and demanding that the city refund the “excessive real estate taxes” that were levied on the property.

The city valued the Shawano Walmart at $9.3 million in 2018 and 2019. It had been valued at about $8.9 million from 2014 through 2017.

Search for SCEPI chief continues

The search for a new head of Shawano County Economic Progress, Inc. is continuing into the new year, even though it was expected to be wrapped up before the end of 2019.

A search committee including representatives from the city, county and SCEPI board interviewed six candidates before finally settling on one who was offered the job.

“We had a person selected and accept and notified us last week that they will no longer be taking the position,” said Shawano City Administrator Eddie Sheppard, who is a member of the search committee.

American Car Care Center sold

SHAWANO — American Car Care Center of Shawano was under new ownership as of Thursday after being sold to the Auto Select franchise.

The business at 1229 E. Green Bay St. has been in operation in Shawano for more than 22 years.

It is now one of 11 car care businesses operated by Auto Select, which has other locations in Appleton, Green Bay, Neenah, Stevens Point and Weston.

Former owner Bruce Milavitz announced the sale on Facebook.
