Nelson granted 2nd delay for hearing

KINGSTON, MO. — Garland “Joey” Nelson’s preliminary hearing on first-degree murder charges in the deaths of Nick and Justin Diemel, both of the Bonduel area, has been delayed for a second time.

The hearing was initially expected to take place in November but the court granted a request from his defense counsel to hold the matter over until Jan. 20.

After another request by his attorney, Garland’s preliminary hearing has now been rescheduled for Feb. 6.

Fans relish playoff game at Lambeau

GREEN BAY — It’s hard to imagine the National Football League postseason without the Green Bay Packers. But for the last two seasons, Packer players and fans had to watch the playoffs from their couches.

With the team making a triumphant return to the postseason — and knowing Sunday’s game against the Seattle Seahawks would be the last at Lambeau Field this season after the San Francisco 49ers win on Saturday — fans soaked up every moment of the playoff atmosphere.

Krueger found not guilty of reckless homicide

SHAWANO — A Shawano man charged with reckless homicide in the death of a 41-year-old Appleton woman in a crash two and a half years ago was found not guilty Friday of that and another felony count after a four-day jury trial.

Brian J. Krueger, 33, was accused of recklessly causing the death of Naomi Gregurich in a two-vehicle crash on state Highway 29 near the intersection of Rangeline Road in the town of Herman on June 29, 2017.

Shawano PD meets new K9 from Crossroads

SHAWANO — The Shawano Police Department got a first look at its newest recruit on Thursday — a furry, four-legged mass of energy expected to help with narcotics detection and suspect apprehension.

Thor made his first appearance in Shawano at City Hall, meeting his human handler, Officer Jacob Korth, and demonstrating his skills to city officials. Thor will officially hit the streets next fall after Korth works with Sean Dumais, who directs dog training at Crossroads K9 Rescue in Kronenwetter.

Boy, 16, charged with attempted homicide

A 16-year-old Marion boy has been charged with attempted first degree homicide, attempted first degree homicide (unborn child), strangulation, false imprisonment and intimidation of a witness-use of force.

At 12:09 p.m. Tuesday, the Marion Police Department was dispatched to a residence for an after-the-fact report of an assault that occurred earlier in the day.

Anello’s owners sued over animal bite

A personal injury suit was filed last week against the owners of Anello’s Torch Lite in Shawano over an animal bite that occurred at their home in the town of Hartland.

Rita and John Mondus have long featured exotic animals at the Torch Lite and keep some at their residence.

The civil suit filed by Peggy Otto, a neighbor of the couple, claims she was bitten by a ring-tailed lemur while dropping off cucumbers at the Mondus home on Aug. 16.

County Board races finalized for April ballot

There will be five contested Shawano County supervisor races on the April ballot, now that the dust has settled on the end of the filing period for the spring election.

Candidates had until 5 p.m. Tuesday to turn in their nomination papers and the signatures needed to qualify for the April 7 ballot.

All 27 County Board seats are up for reelection, though three have declared they are not running again and one has resigned her seat to move to another district.

Recent proceedings in Shawano-Menominee County Circuit Court:

• Joseph R. Cowden, 37, of Shawano, was charged Jan. 8 with a felony count of third-degree sexual assault. He could a maximum face 10 years in prison and $25,000 fine if convicted. Cowden is scheduled for an initial court appearance on Feb. 10.

Suring veteran recognized with Old Glory Honor Flight

SURING — Friends and family say Joe Trever didn’t talk much about his service during the Vietnam War, but that has changed since he experienced Northeast Wisconsin’s Old Glory Honor Flight on Oct. 23, as a thank you for his service.

The Old Glory Honor Flight organization offers a whirlwind one-day guided tour of Washington, D.C., to veterans of World War II, the Korean War, or Vietnam War. The trip includes a number of surprises including a huge welcome-home celebration at the airport when they land back in Wisconsin.
