Prepare for the 2024-25 respiratory illness season

As the 2024-25 respiratory illness season approaches, communities across the region are bracing for the challenges posed by COVID-19, influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). With updated vaccines and new recommendations in place, individuals are encouraged take proactive steps to protect themselves and their loved ones against these respiratory illnesses.

Dr. Michael Walters, Aspirus senior vice president and system chief medical officer, emphasized the importance of vaccination in maintaining community health.

Successful 24 Hour Theater program returns

Abrams Spotlight Productions (ASPI) will present a series of spooky skits at its second annual 24 Hour Theater event.

Individuals ages 14 and older are invited to participate in this Halloween-themed creative event on Oct. 25-26 at the Nancy Byng Community Theater, 5852 Maple St., Abrams.

5-year library plan gets final OK

The Oconto County Board passed a five-year library services plan Sept. 19 covering the years 2025 through 2029, with supervisors from the Oconto Falls area objecting to the size of the revenue cut slated for the Oconto Falls Community Library in 2025.

The plan revises the formula for allocating the county-administered library tax levy in a way that reduces the funds distributed to five of the six local libraries in Oconto County. Oconto Falls’ $15,623 reduction is roughly one-third of the total cut of $45,564.

• Brady J. Peterka, pleaded no contest June 13 to fleeing an officer in his vehicle. On Sept. 16, Judge William Kussel Jr. imposed and stayed a prison sentence and placed him on three years of probation with fines and conditions.

ThedaCare hosting clinics in October, November

ThedaCare will host a series of immunization and vaccination clinics throughout various communities in northeast and central Wisconsin.
Individuals can receive any needed vaccines for themselves or their family members. This includes flu, COVID-19, RSV and pneumonia, as well as needed child or adult routine vaccines.

Through November, the mobile team will travel to ThedaCare Medical Center-Shawano from 3-7 p.m. Mondays and 8 a.m. to noon Wednesdays. Based on community needs, more dates and locations might be added.

Gillett schools face a budget deficit

The Gillett School Board expects to be dealing with a deficit in its 2024-25 annual budget.

During the board’s Sept. 19 meeting, Superintendent Nathan Hanson said the deficit will probably be six figures or more, depending on how much state aid the district receives.

Board Treasurer Cliff Gerbers said the situation is not unexpected.

Child sex assault trial to proceed

An Oconto County judge Sept. 20 denied a defense motion to dismiss charges against an Oconto man accused of child sex assault, but the judge did confirm dismissal of three charges that he had dismissed before an April 2022 trial ended in a mistrial.
