2 semis collide on Highway 47; 1 person hurt

State Highway 47 was closed for about seven hours Sept. 21 after law enforcement dealt with the aftermath of two semis colliding.

At about 7:50 a.m., Shawano County sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a two-vehicle crash just north of County Road S. The initial report indicated this crash involved two semitrailers with road blockage and injuries. Upon arriving on scene, both semis were disabled in the lane of travel and the entirety of Highway 47 in that area was closed. Detours were set up to reroute traffic, according to a sheriff’s department press release.

Family apple orchard continues to grow

“Ugly apples are sometimes the best tasting,” said Paul Hammen, of Hammen Family Orchard and Winery on County Road E west of Bonduel.

Certain varieties, such as the knobbed russet, aren’t as red, round and shiny as the apple people would typically reach for, but Hammen attested that they can surprise with exceptional taste.

“That’s why we do apple tastings. Because there are lots of ugly apples out there,” he said. “The knobbed russet is the world’s ugliest apple but one of the best tasting apples.

Plans in works for former Pick ‘N Save

There could be signs of life in the former Pick ‘N Save building in Woodlawn Plaza after the site has been vacant for years.

However, it’s not going to be some other grocery store, according to City Administrator Eddie Sheppard. He told the Shawano Industrial and Commercial Development Committee on Sept. 21 that the city and Shawano County Economic Progress Inc. are working with a developer to turn the building into a production and manufacturing site with a potential retail component.

Menominee Indian School District annual meeting set

The Menominee Indian School District will hold its annual meeting Sept. 27 at the Menominee Indian High School Theater. The budget meeting will begin at 4:30 p.m., and the annual meeting will begin at 5 p.m.

• Tyler T. Wegner, 22, Shawano, pleaded no contest May 19 to second-degree recklessly endangering safety. On Sept. 11, Shawano-Menominee County Judge William F. Kussel Jr. withheld sentencing and placed him on probation for three years with conditions, beginning with at least three months in the county jail.

Seymour man faces sex assault charges

A Seymour man is facing a second set of charges involving sexual assault two months after the first case was brought against him.

Jacob D. Rudnick, 29, is being charged with two counts of third-degree sexual assault and one count of second-degree sexual assault for an attack that allegedly took place in a park in the Town of Lessor on Halloween last year. The Seymour Police Department initially took the victim’s statement and collected evidence from her before handing it over to the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department.

23 agencies respond to Pulaski fire

A Sept. 14 fire that destroyed two businesses in downtown Pulaski illustrated the value of mutual aid agreements among fire departments across northeast Wisconsin.

The blaze, which broke out around 3:30 p.m., destroyed the structure at 114 and 118 W. Pulaski St., a building that housed LaCount Auctions LLC and A Kut Above Salon.

Operational referendum plans shelved

The Shawano School District is scrapping plans for an operational referendum that would have let it exceed levy limits for the next few years as Superintendent Kurt Krizan announced Sept. 15 that there is a $2.6 million surplus left from the 2022-23 budget.

Kasper pleads guilty to Jan. 6 crimes

A Pulaski man charged with pleaded guilty Friday to assaulting, resisting or impeding police officers during the Jan. 6, 2021, breach of the U.S Capitol.

Riley D. Kasper, 24, faces maximum penalties of up to eight years in prison if the offense involved physical contact with the assault victim.

Kasper was at the Capitol when a vast number of persons were attempting to disrupt a joint session of the U.S. Congress convened to certify the electoral votes cast in the 2020 presidential election.
