Non-resident hunting and fishing license fees increase

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources announced a fee increase for many non-resident hunting and fishing licenses as a result of the final 2024-25 budget.

The fee changes range from $5-$40 and are only for non-residents. Licenses for the 2023-24 season are valid through March 31, 2024. The last time license fees for residents or non-residents increased was 2005.

New non-resident hunting fees are animal small game $90, five-day small game $60, deer $200, archery and crossbow $165, turkey $65 and fur-bearing animal $165.

DNR retiring Hunt Wild Wisconsin mobile app

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources announced that as of June 29 the Hunt Wild mobile application will be retired.

Instead, hunting and regulation resources can be found on the DNR’s hunting webpage (dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/Hunt)

The Hunt Wild mobile application was launched in 2018 to provide mobile access to hunting information. Hunting hours, site-specific rules and regulations, CWD sampling locations, public lands information and more could be found on the app.

Spring turkey harvest numbers up 7% over 5-year average

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources announced preliminary totals for the 2023 spring turkey season on June 16. Wisconsin turkey hunters registered 42,439 birds this season, a 7% increase from the five-year average.

The 2023 spring season started on April 15 with the two-day youth hunt for hunters under 16 years old. A total of 2,972 birds were registered, a 28% increase from the five-year average.

DNR publishes 2023-24 fishing regulations

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources announced April 3 that the 2023-2024 Wisconsin’s Fishing Regulations Guide is now available.

The regulations guide can be read online at widnr.widen.net/s/fwdfffxqzv/fishingregselectronic2324. The general fishing and trout fishing regulations can also be found at locations where licenses are sold.

Youth turkey hunt is April 15-16

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources reminds families, mentors and young hunters there’s still time to plan for the 2023 youth turkey hunt happening statewide April 15-16.

Each year, the youth turkey hunt gives hunters under 16 the opportunity to gain valuable hunting experience and feel the excitement of turkey season before the regular season begins.

Wisconsin NRB meeting set for April 12

The Wisconsin Natural Resources Board will meet in-person for the April board meeting to consider several proposed rulemaking documents, fish and wildlife matters, and donations.

The meeting will begin at 8:30 a.m. on April 12, originating from public meeting room G09, State Natural Resources Building (GEF2), 101 S. Webster Street, Madison, Wisconsin. The board will act on items 1-4 and 7 as listed on the agenda (widnr.widen.net/s/dmdrjgdzcd/2023-04-12-nrb-meeting-agenda_final).

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources reminds wild turkey hunters that applications for the 2023 season are due by 11:59 p.m. on Dec. 10.

Hunters can apply for harvest authorizations or purchase preference points toward future drawings at GoWild.wi.gov or through an authorized license agent.

Turkey harvest authorizations are issued through a preference-based drawing system. More information on the turkey preference drawing is available in the Turkey Frequently Asked Questions (dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/hunt/turkeyquestion.html).

Black bear harvest authorization applications due Dec. 10

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources reminds black bear hunters that applications for the 2023 season are due by 11:59 p.m. on Dec. 10.

Hunters can apply for harvest authorizations or purchase preference points toward future drawings at GoWild.wi.gov or through an authorized license agent.

Preliminary estimates show hunters harvested approximately 4,100 bears during the 2022 black bear season. Final harvest totals will be available at a later date. In the meantime, DNR staff and the Bear Advisory Committee are currently determining the 2023 harvest quotas.

Deer gun harvest numbers up across state

The preliminary 2022 nine-day gun deer season harvest totals were up 14.4% across Wisconsin.

A total of 203,295 deer were harvested this year, compared to 177,667 a year ago. Of this year’s total, 104,898 deer taken were antlerless, while 98,397 were antlered.

DNR hosting webinar on where to practice shooting

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources will host the fourth of several educational hunting webinars at 7 p.m. on Oct. 19 for anyone new to hunting or looking to learn more about hunting.

October’s webinar is titled – Wanna Go Hunting: Where Can We Practice Shooting? – and will share information about finding firearm and archery shooting ranges, target practice opportunities, range etiquette and safety rules.
