WASP swimmers compete at state meet

Audrey Wierzba and a Wittenberg Area Swim Program (WASP) medley relay team were among those participating in the 12 & Under Long Course Meter Summer State Championships at Walter Schroeder Aquatic Center in Brown Deer on July 26-28.

In the girls 11-12 category, Wierzba, 12, placed 30th in the 200-meter breaststroke in 3:25.58; 42nd in the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:35.96; 51st in the 50-meter breaststroke in 44.27; and 56th in the 50-meter freestyle in 35.47.

WASP’s Aubrey Wierzba wins regional title

Aubrey Wierzba was crowned the 100-meter breaststroke regional champion at the 2024 Wisconsin Summer Regional Championships hosted by Rocket Aquatics in Brown Deer on July 20-21.

Joining Wierzba, 12, in competing for the Wittenberg Area Swim Program (WASP) were Rylee Crick, 14, and Aislyn Sauter, 12. The swimmers were coached by head coach Brenna Opper and coach Lauren Bahr.

Swimmer Aubrey Wierzba qualifies for state

Aubrey Wierzba, 12, achieved a state qualifying time at the 25th Bird Bath Invitational in Appleton.

A member of the Wittenberg Area Swim Program (WASP), Wierzba achieved a state qualifying time in the 100-meter breaststroke July 13 and in the 200-meter breaststroke July 14.

Lauren Bahr, Kalee Gilmeister and Laura Gilmeister coached the 13 members of WASP that competed at Erb Pool on July 12-14. More than 1,000 swimmers from around the state participated.

WASP swimmers compete in Merrill, Eau Claire

Tough competition greeted the Wittenberg Area Swim Program when members swam at the Fairfax Outdoor Swim Meet in Eau Claire on June 29-30. Only a handful of top-10 finishes were recorded by the local team.

The team had a more successful outing a week earlier, when the competed at the Northern Lakes Aquatic Club for Merrill Swim Meet on June 22.

In Eau Claire, both swimmers in the 8 and Under group earned top-10 finishes.

Lucy Wierzba, 7, was fifth in the 50-meter breaststroke in 1:11.77 and sixth in the 50-meter freestyle in 52.42.

WASP swimmers win home meet

Wittenberg Area Swim Program coaches Brenna Opper, Kaylee Gilmeister, Laura Gilmeister and Lauren Baar led their swimmers to a team victory when they hosted the Summer Social Swim Meet on June 7 at the Darwin E. Smith Aquatic Center.

Kaydence Crick, Aislyn Sauter, Peyton Crick and Aubrey Wierzba won the mixed 11-12 200-yard medley relay in 2:22.35. They were followed by Michael Reynolds, Ava Lindbro, Maddy Kessel and Ryan Rehn of the Pulaski Area Swim Club in 2:30.84.

Wittenberg swimmers earn top spots at Howard-Suamico

Members of the Wittenberg Area Swim Program (WASP) collected several top 10 finishes June 1 at the Howard-Suamico Summer Swim Meet.

In the 8 and Under division, Lucy Wierzba, 6, placed sixth in the 25-yard backstroke in 24.72, third in the 25-yard breaststroke in 30.35, seventh in the 25-yard freestyle in 21.74 and second in the 100-yard individual medley in 2:04.9.

Brinley Wierzba, 9, competed in the Girls 9-10 division and placed sixth in the 50-yard backstroke in 46.92 and sixth in the 50-yard freestyle in 38.15.

WASP competitors earn several top 10 finishes in Ashwaubenon

Wittenberg Area Swim Program swimmers Aislyn Sauter, Peyton Crick and Kaydence Crick earned seven top 10 spots at the Ashwaubenon Swim Club’s Spring Meet held May 17-18.

In the girls 11-12 division, Aislyn Sauter placed in the top seven in each of her four events.

Sauter was fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:32.09. Sixth-place finishes were earned in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:26.4 and the 500-yard freestyle in 7:33.87. She was seventh in the 50-yard freestyle in 31.92.

WASP opens 2024 spring, summer season

The Wittenberg Area Swim Program (WASP) kicked off its 2024 spring and summer season earlier this month, with four competitors swimming in Appleton.

Lucy Wierzba, 6, placed third in the 25-yard backstroke in 24.83 seconds. She finished seventh in the 25-yard freestyle in 20.11.

Aubrey Wierzba, 11, finished in seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:30.4 and 12th in the 100-yard individual medley in 1:18.27. She was also 29th in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:22.71 and 36th in the 50-yard freestyle in 32.14.

Swimmers raise more than $2,000

More than $2,000 was raised at the recent swim-a-thon to benefit the Wittenberg Area Swim Program (WASP).

Swimmers raised funds from pledges on a per-lap basis.

Proceeds will be used for equipment purchases and coaching fees.

Among those participating in the swim-a-thon fundraiser were Myles Sauter, Lucy Wierzba, Emma Quade, Jessica Quade, Brinley Wierzba, Grace Hegewald, Halley Innes, Kaydence Crick, Peyton Crick, Evelyn Hegewald, Rylee Crick, Elizabeth Behnke, Alayna Rasmussen and Aislyn Sauter.

WASP swimmers compete at regionals

Three members of the Wittenberg Area Swim Program (WASP) competed in the regional championships in Fond du Lac on Feb. 16-18.

Each swimmer participated in several events, and each finished in the top 10 in at least one of her events.

Rylee Crick, 13, earned four top five finishes. Crick placed second in the 50-yard breaststroke in 35.74 seconds, fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:29.27, fourth in the 50-yard fly in 30.54 and fifth in the 100-yard fly in 1:12.26.
