WASP’s Aubrey Wierzba wins regional title

Aubrey Wierzba was crowned the 100-meter breaststroke regional champion at the 2024 Wisconsin Summer Regional Championships hosted by Rocket Aquatics in Brown Deer on July 20-21.

Joining Wierzba, 12, in competing for the Wittenberg Area Swim Program (WASP) were Rylee Crick, 14, and Aislyn Sauter, 12. The swimmers were coached by head coach Brenna Opper and coach Lauren Bahr.

Shawano Recreation Center pool manager retiring

SHAWANO — It has been 33 years since Dave Kolitsch plunged into the deep end of being pool manager at the Shawano Recreation Center.

As he approaches the age of 57, the time has come to hang up his trunks. His last day is March 2.

It’s a job he says he’ll miss.

“If you stick with it that long, you either like it or you’re crazy,” Kolitsch said. “Some people say I’m crazy, but I think it’s because I like it. You know the old saying, ‘if you love your job it’s not like working.’”

Kolitsch grew up in Appleton and was a competitive swimmer.

Boys Swim: Shawano drops GNC dual to Tomahawk

SHAWANO — The Shawano Community High School boys swim team was unable to secure any first-place finishes in a Great Northern Conference dual against Tomahawk on Thursday. Tomahawk went on for a 114-51 win.

Senior Peter Fuller led Shawano in the pool, taking second in two individual events and helping two relay teams also take second.

Fuller posted a time of 6 minutes, 0.49 seconds in the 500-yard freestyle and a mark of 2:30.2 in the 200 IM.

Finger makes all-conference team

Clintonville High School graduate and UW-Superior junior Tyler Finger made the second team all-conference to help his team to a second-place finish in the conference championship on Saturday.

Finger finished 15th overall to earn the all-conference spot, completing the course at Nemadji Golf Course in Superior in 28 minutes, 19.2 seconds.

Finger was also the team’s representative for the UMAC Sportsmanship Award.

WITTENBERG — The Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School girls swim team is off to a quick start this season, with senior Lauren Bahr among the individual swimmers racking up the strong finishes.

Coming off a foot injury in the spring track and field season, Bahr was still able to swim to a third-place finish in the senior class at the Colby Pentathlon, the Chargers first action of the fall. Bahr then took first in the senior class at the Marinette Pentathlon on Aug. 24.

Gresham goes 0-3 at tournament

The Wildcats were unable to win a set at the Three Lakes Tournament on Thursday, falling to Prentice (25-16, 25-17, 15-6), Mercer (25-16, 25-13, 15-7) and Three Lakes (25-14, 25-18, 15-11).

Against Prentice, Karisa Nietzer finished with eight kills, while Makayla Belongia had eight digs. Hannah Cerveny tallied five assists.

Shawano/Bonduel girls swim team striving for better finish in Bay

SHAWANO — The Shawano/Bonduel co-op and Clintonville girls swim teams head into the fall season with improvement on their minds and new coaches at the helm.

Both teams will hit the water for their first meets later this week.

Gina Monfils is the team’s new coach, and she hopes to lead the team to more success within the Bay Conference.

Witt-Birn girls swim team dives into new season

WITTENBERG — The Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School girls swim team eyes a successful season this fall with more swimmers on the roster than in previous years.

“Our main challenge continues to be small numbers,” said coach John Rudeen. “I think I will be lucky to have 10 swimmers this year, which fills enough events to be competitive in most meets.”

The Chargers’ 2018 swim season included a fourth-place finish at the seven-team Bay Conference Championship Meet and a fifth-place finish at sectionals. The team had eight swimmers on that roster.
