Softball, baseball players honored by state, district

Several area softball and baseball players picked up all-state and all-district honors after the seasons wrapped up.

Players from Shawano, Bonduel, Marion, Wittenberg-Birnamwood and Pulaski were recognized for their play on the diamond and some for their work in the classroom.

Pulaski’s Morgan Vertz and Molly Molthen, Wittenberg-Birnamwood’s Rory Salvesen and Bonduel’s Hailee Thompson all landed on all-state teams put out by the Wisconsin Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association.

Area high school softball teams enjoyed plenty of success during the spring season, with a few teams and several individuals standing out.

It was Pulaski junior Morgan Vertz and Bonduel junior Hailee Thompson who were the top performers throughout the season, and were named the NEW Media Inc. Players of the Year for their efforts.

Both players were named Co-Players of the Year in their respective conferences and landed on all-state second teams.

Swartz, May share CWC-North’s top honor

The Central Wisconsin Conference-North Division was made up of just four softball teams this spring, with the three area teams in the conference making up a good portion of the all-conference lists.

Tigerton senior Abby Swartz and Bowler/Gresham junior Emma May shared the Player of the Year honor after big seasons at the plate.

Swartz collected 14 hits, including three homers, in conference play to finish with a .467 batting average. She also walked 16 times to contribute to a .652 on-base percentage.

Panthers’ Danielczak makes NEC 1st team as freshman

Five members of the Oconto Falls softball team earned North Eastern Conference recognition after the spring season concluded.

Freshman Amelia Danielczak earned the team’s top honor, landing on the first team. Senior Lily Kurek made the second team, while junior Keira Cole and sophomores Madeline Maloney and Randi Metzler were all honorable mentions.

Statistics provided include 15 of the 18 Oconto Falls’ conference contests. The missing three games were not reported to the conference.

Shawano pair earns all-conference recognition

Shawano’s Marissa Tomashek and Abby Bystol each earned recognition from the Bay Conference after the spring softball season.

The Hawks did not have anyone make the first team after tying for fifth place in the conference with a 3-8 record. Tomashek, a sophomore, made the second team, while Bystol was an honorable mention in her junior season.

Tomashek received her recognition as an outfielder.

In Bay action, Tomashek posted a .400 batting average after tallying 12 hits. She drove in four runs and scored 11 times.

Kristof tabbed top player in M&O

Emma Kristof earned the Player of the Year honor in the Marinette & Oconto Conference after a big sophomore season for the Gillett/Suring softball co-op.

Kristof made the all-conference first team as an infielder after leading the co-op from her shortstop position. She was named the top player despite Gillett/Suring finishing third in the M&O with a 5-5 mark.

Bears’ Thompson named Co-Player of Year in CWC-East

Bonduel High School junior softball player Hailee Thompson was named the Co-Player of the Year in the Central Wisconsin Conference-East Division this spring.

Thompson made the all-conference first team unanimously after serving as the team’s shortstop this spring. She shared the Player of the Year honor with Amherst senior Haley Peskie.

Pulaski High School’s Morgan Vertz was named the Co-Player of the Year in the Fox River Classic Conference after a huge junior season on the softball diamond.

Vertz landed on the all-conference first team as a pitcher, but also starred at the plate for the Red Raiders. She shared the Player of the Year honor with Green Bay Preble sophomore Katie Geydoshek.

Vertz was an absolute workhorse for Pulaski, pitching in all 18 conference games. She covered 100⅓ innings, striking out 153 batters and walking just 19.

Pulaski, Bonduel softball teams eliminated in sectional semifinals

The Pulaski and Bonduel softball teams were both eliminated from the playoffs after sectional semifinal losses on May 30.

Third-seeded Pulaski fell 11-1 in six innings to second-seeded Green Bay Preble. Top-seeded Bonduel lost 9-6 to third-seeded Iola-Scandinavia in Bonduel.

Pulaski jumped out to a 1-0 lead after a Cassie Benberg home run in the first inning, but things went downhill after that. Preble scored five times in its half of the first and four more times in the second to pull away. Single runs in the fourth and sixth for the hosts ended the contest.

Late charge propels Bears to regional softball title

The Bonduel High School softball team rallied from an early deficit before putting together a big inning late to earn a 7-2 Division 4 regional title win over Manawa on May 25 in Bonduel.

Top-seeded Bonduel fell behind 2-0 after fifth-seeded Manawa scored in the first and second innings. The Bears tied things up in the bottom of the second, and the game remained deadlocked until the sixth, when the hosts erupted for five runs to pull away.
