Ski Sharks finish 4th at state

The Shawano Ski Sharks turned in a solid showing at the Wisconsin State Water Ski Show Championships on July 21-22 on Lake Wazeecha in Wisconsin Rapids. The team earned a couple of awards, had several individuals place well and claimed fourth place as a team.

The Ski Sharks performed as a team on July 22, racking up 1,256.8 points to come in fourth in Division 2. Shawano finished behind the Crivitz Ski Cats (1,410.02), Badwater Ski-ters (1,289.68) and Water Walkers (1,269.66).

Ski Sharks eager to keep up recent success at state

The Shawano Ski Sharks have had plenty of success at the Wisconsin State Water Ski Show Championships over the past few years and are ready to keep the trend going this week.

The Ski Sharks will be headed to South Wood County Park to compete on Lake Wazeecha over a couple of days. Several Ski Shark members will be competing on July 21 before the team competes together during the afternoon on July 22.

Ski Sharks’ Carsten McHugh wins freestyle jump competition

Three members of the Shawano Ski Sharks competed in the Division 2 national qualifiers event on July 16 in Shawano, with Carsten McHugh taking home a first-place finish in the intermediate freestyle jump competition to lead the trio.

Ben Wagner placed third in the freestyle jump competition, while Faith McHugh came in 10th in the 360 swivel event.

Carsten McHugh earned a score of 90 on his three jumps. He landed his first two jumps, doing a helicopter for a mark of 63.33 and spread eagle for 26.67.

Ski Sharks make return for 2022 season

Smalley Park was once again filled with community members and water skis for the Shawano Ski Sharks’ first official show of the 2022 season on June 8.

“I think what we have is a lot of awesome skiers that are ready to roll,” said Ski Sharks president Dave Passehl. “You just never know how the first show is going to go. You don’t know how the theme is going to go. You don’t know how the time is going.”

Due to inclement weather in the past month, Passehl said that the team had limited practice time to prepare for their first show.

Ski Sharks members headed to Florida to break records

Members of the Shawano Ski Sharks are headed to central Florida this week to try and help break some world and national records.

The event is titled Chain of Records and will run Oct. 20-24 on Little Lake Eloise in Winter Haven, Florida.

Over the five days, a total of 16 national and 12 world record attempts will be made. A schedule of Chain of Records can be found at https://www.chainofrecords.com/schedule/chain-of-records-2021-2.

Ski Sharks Give Back

On behalf of the Shawano Ski Sharks, Dave Passehl, left, and Brad Keuschel, right, present a check for $2,850 to Dick Marbes, center, of the local chapter of Disabled American Veterans on Sept. 20. On Sept. 11, the Ski Sharks hosted an event with skiers from around the state as a fundraiser for the local chapter of Disabled American Veterans. The Ski Sharks set a goal of $1,000 and had a donor that matched up to $1,000. The money will be put toward helping the DAV continue providing free medical transportation to those who served our country.

Ski Sharks’ Passehl takes 7th in D1 swivel competition

Shawano Ski Sharks’ Faith Passehl placed seventh in the swivel competition at the Division 1 Show Ski National Championships on Aug. 13 at Traxler Park in Janesville.

“My run went good for the most part; I skied clean and dry,” said Passehl. “However, one of my highest scoring passes didn’t go as planned, which is OK. I’m just happy I stayed dry.

“At first, placing seventh made me a little upset knowing that I could have skied better. But after I sat and thought about it, being seventh in the whole country for swivel is pretty amazing and something to be proud of.”

Ski Sharks place 2nd at national championships

The Shawano Ski Sharks enjoyed a successful weekend on the water during the Division 2 Show Ski National Championships that Shawano hosted.

The Ski Sharks took second out of nine teams in the team competition and had several individuals shine as well.

Shawano accumulated 1,238.9 points for its second-place finish. Shermalot (Nekoosa) came in first with 1,364.57 points.

Shawano eager to host national championships

Shawano is eager to host its first ever national championship, an event that took several years to prepare for and bring to the Shawano Ski Sharks show site.

The Division 2 Show Ski National Championships will be held Aug. 6-8 on the Wolf River, with fans scattered across Smalley Park to watch the action on the water.

The process of bringing a national championship to Shawano first began about 10 years ago, according to Brad Keuschel, a member of the Ski Sharks. Keuschel recalled telling team president Dave Passehl that one day he’d help bring nationals to Shawano.

Guidelines on Wolf River with water ski championship in town

With the Division 2 Show Ski National Championships taking place Aug. 6-8, there are some changes to Wolf River access and usage of which people should be aware.

On those three days, there will be a legal waterway closure to non-competition boat traffic from the trestle to the dam. This is in place for the safety of all water ski individuals, teams and boats in action.

There will also be a no-wake passage from the channel to the trestle so that boat traffic can still move through. The area will be marked by buoys.
