Hillcrest gets grant for after-school programming

The Shawano School District and the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Bay and Lakes Region have announced the award of a 21st Century Community Learning Center (21st CCLC) grant to support and establish after-school programming at Hillcrest Primary School.

This prestigious grant, aimed at enriching the educational experience of students, will significantly enhance the opportunities and resources available to Hillcrest. The grant is for $80,000 per year for the next five years.

Dembski PR firm gets 2nd year with Shawano schools

The Shawano School District will continue to enlist the public relations help from Dorreen Dembski Communication Services for a second year and plans to lean in especially heavy as it prepares to ask voters a second time to approve a capital referendum.

The Shawano School Board voted 6-1 on July 8 to continue the partnership between the district and the Fond du Lac-based company. Board member Frank Kugel voted against the deal, while board members Al Pyatskowit and Christine McKinnies were absent.

Shawano School District approves prelim budget

The Shawano School Board gave approval to its preliminary budget June 10, beginning the process to refine things and have a final budget ready for approval in late October.

Student enrollment is expected to decline as it has been for several years, but expenses and revenues are expected to increase, according to financial consultant Bryan Kadlec.

“This (preliminary budget) helps to guide our operations from this point until the official budget is approved,” Kadlec said.

More students leaving Shawano schools

Shawano School District had a nearly 2-1 ratio more than a decade ago on students coming into the district through Wisconsin’s open enrollment program versus local children attending school in other districts.

That trend has since flipped, with many more students in the Shawano area attending schools elsewhere than students outside the district boundaries attending the local public schools, according to data revealed at the May 13 Shawano School Board meeting.

Shawano School District shelves day care plans

Plans for a school-based day care appear to be out as the Shawano School District prepares revised plans for a referendum to send to voters in November.

The Shawano School Board spent over two hours May 7 discussing the feedback received from three listening sessions in April about why its previous referendum failed by 75 votes. While the issue of day care was a key point, so was the issue of communication and how there weren’t enough details about how much specific projects were going to cost.

School district seeks to fill board vacancy

The Shawano School District is accepting applications for a vacancy on the Shawano School Board.

Applicants must be residents of Area III, which is the Town of Wescott and the portion of the Town of Washington in the Shawano district, 18 years of age or older and a U.S. citizen.

The appointment will be through the April 2025 spring election, at which time the successor can be elected for the remainder of the term, April 2026.

Feedback shows limited info impacted referendum

Shawano School District officials have been preaching full transparency in recent months, but a listening session following the failed April referendum indicates that transparency needs some tweaks.

The listening session on April 23 was the last of three the district held in conference with its referendum consultants, Hoffman Planning and Design. A common theme that came out of the evening about the $54.5 million referendum not getting passed was that the devil was in the details — specifically a lack of them and how they were distributed.
