Billi Vertz is retiring as Pulaski High School girls softball coach after a successful 20-year run as head coach at PHS and 26 years in coaching.

“I have had the pleasure of watching Billi Vertz compete in softball as a player and a coach,” said PHS athletic and activities director Janel Batten. “No matter on the mound or in the third base coaching box, Billi Vertz is a true competitor with a passion for softball and grit and determination like no one I have ever met.”

Batten worked with Vertz during the last half of her coaching career.

Pulaski police remind about use of vehicles on streets

The Pulaski Police Department reminds residents of the local ordinances regarding the use of mini dirt bikes, electric bikes, electric skateboards, mopeds and other modes of transportation.

“Your cooperation helps keep our community safe and enjoyable for everyone,” the department said in a statement. “Let’s make this summer safe and fun for all.”

Parents testify to horrific bonfire aftermath

Samuel Armstrong, the Pulaski High School student found guilty of 13 counts of injury by negligent use of an explosive, listened to about an hour of testimony from one of his victims and two families, along with evidence presented by the Shawano-Menominee County district attorney, before he was sentenced to one year in jail and five years’ probation for his role in a homecoming bonfire gone horribly wrong.

Pulaski names new girls golf coaches

Pulaski High School girls golf will have three new coaches next season. John Heinz is the new head coach. Assistants will be Kimberly Froseth and Taylor Walters, who will co-coach the junior varsity squad.

“I would like to thank Sarah Kohls for her many years of service leading the PHS girls golf team and am thankful for Andy Bock’s knowledge and expertise that he shared with our student athletes over the last years,” said PHS athletic director Janel Batten.

Batten is excited by the new coaching staff.

Ice Bears fall in state title game

The Bay Area Ice Bears had a dozen more shots on goal than the Central Wisconsin Storm but still came up one goal short in the WIAA state title game March 2.

The 4-3 loss started with a scoreless first period before the Ice Bears took a 1-0 lead at 4:04 in the second period on a goal by Addison Dahl and an assist from Julianne Bradford.

The Storm tied the game at 1-1 a minute later.

As the third period started, the Storm scored two more goals for a 3-1 lead. Pulaski sophomore Faye Brunke scored at 7:47 to make it 3-2.

Schultz’ 24 points not enough as Appleton East takes down Pulaski

It’s never easy to go on the road and win in high school basketball, and the Pulaski Red Raiders (10-9) found that out the hard way Feb. 3.

Facing off against Appleton East (4-13) in a non-conference tilt, it was a story of two players going head to head in an epic player vs. player matchup.

Used instrument auction part of Casimir Pulaski Days

Promote Pulaski, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is hosting a live used instrument auction during Casimir Pulaski Days in Pulaski on March 9.

This event will take place in conjunction with a concertina and accordion swap meet at Scolly’s Hometown Ballroom, 149 W. Pulaski St., Pulaski.

Plea hearing scheduled for Pulaski man

Jeffrey Wilson, 65, a Pulaski man who is facing a charge of first-degree child sexual assault with a child under age 13, in relation to an incident in the Town of Angelica in July 2022, is expected to enter a plea in March.

Quinn Jolly, Wilson’s attorney, said the matter is close to a resolution with the Shawano-Menominee County District Attorney’s office. A plea hearing was scheduled for 3:15 p.m. March 21 at Shawano County Courthouse Branch I, with a sentencing hearing expected to follow at a later date.

Pulaski water costs expected to exceed $15.3M

The cost to bring water to Pulaski from the Green Bay Water Utility is an estimated $15.3 million, according to a construction application filed last month with the Wisconsin Public Service Commission.

The project could pump up overall water rates by 218%, staff at Robert E. Lee Engineering estimated.

Efforts to get current water rates locally were unsuccessful. However, a February 2022 PSC order authorized charging average residential customers $92.15 quarterly for using 10,000 gallons of water.

Pulaski grinds out gutsy win versus Menasha

It may not always be pretty, but a win is a win when it comes to high school basketball.

That is what the Pulaski girls endured Dec. 28 against Menasha as things were far from pretty, but the Red Raiders did what they needed to do.
