Pulaski High School names volleyball coaches

Pulaski High School has two new volleyball coaches.

Kaitlin Skarban is the new head varsity coach. She replaces Bethani Thibodeau, who retired at the end of the recent season. Laura Lojpersberger is the new JV1 coach, replacing Danny Emmerich, who is stepping away from coaching.

Five area volleyball players earn all-state honors

Five area volleyball players were among the 216 students honored with all-state recognition, the Wisconsin Volleyball Coaches Association announced.

Divisions 1 and 2 named a pair of 10-member first and second teams, Divisions 3 and 4 named a sole 10-member first team, and all four divisions added a list of honorable mention athletes.

The five local athletes all earned honorable mention status.

In Division 2, Shawano senior Abby Bystol and Oconto Falls junior Amber Otto were recognized.

Swimmers bring home medals from state meet

The Wittenberg-Birnamwood girls swim team made the most of its eight qualifying entries in this year’s Division 2 State Championship swim meet Nov. 10 in Waukesha.

The Chargers got off to a quick start when the 200-yard medley relay team of Kelsie Davis, Reese Dickman, Faith Resch and Ava Hegewald placed 11th and set a new school record of 1:54.27. The old record has held since 2005.

Later in the meet, that same foursome made a podium appearance when they again broke the school record in the 200-yard freestyle relay and placed sixth to secure a trip to the medal ceremony.

Adams named top boys runner in NEC

Oconto Falls’ Ben Adams is the Northeastern Conference cross country boys runner of the year, officials announced.

Adams, a junior, was also named to the NEC all-conference first team. Teammate Griffin Kopke, a junior, was named to the second team, and freshman Isaiah Holtz earned honorable mention status.

For the girls, junior Brooke Hodkiewicz was named to the first team.

Teammates Hailey Delzer, a junior, and Emma Meissner, a freshman, were named to the second team. Senior Hannah Ludemann earned honorable mention status.

Witt-Birn swimmers to compete at state meet

The Wittenberg-Birnamwood girls swim team stepped up big time at their sectional championship meet in Merrill on Nov. 4.

Of the 14 events in the Division 2 meet, the Chargers qualified in eight events to compete in the state championship.

The highest seed of those events is the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Faith Resch, Kelsie Davis, Ava Hegewald and Reese Dickman that is seeded sixth. The group placed second at sectionals.

Davis, Dickman, Resch and Hegewald also advanced to the state meet in the 200-yard medley relay after finishing second at Merrill.

Tigers rush past Chargers in Level 3

When a team reaches Level 3 of the high school football playoffs, there are no more easy games.

This the point when the eight best teams in their respective divisions get together to compete for their spot in the state semifinal games. Wittenberg-Birnamwood has not only been one of the best teams in the state all season, they have continued to do it in a variety of ways that helped them race out to a 10-1 record through 11 games.

Shawano, Bonduel girls cross country teams take sixth at state

Teams and individuals earned titles in three divisions at the 2023 Boys & Girls State Cross Country Championships at The Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids on Oct. 28.

In the Division 1 girls race, Olivia Stedl of Pulaski placed 123rd with a time of 20:44.8.

In the Division 2 girls race, Shawano placed sixth.

Bailey Hendricks ended up in 24th place in 19:56.7. She was joined by Grace Chelberg in 51st, Lilly Guenther in 53rd, Adalyn Barkley in 86th and Macy Beyer in 96th.

Anabelle Schroeder (113th) and Arica Preston (145th) also ran for the Hawks.

Adams still short of OFHS school record

The Oconto Falls High School cross country record is safe — for now.

J.R. Miller has held the mark of 16:01 since 1997. Miller’s older sister is current Oconto County Clerk Kim Pytleski, who brought up the subject at the Oct. 26 county board meeting.

That’s because Supervisor Al Schreiber’s grandson, Ben Adams, is currently just six seconds off the record, and he was preparing to represent OFHS at the state cross country tournament in Wisconsin Rapids two days later.

Goal line stand sends Chargers to Level 3

How fitting of an end was this? Already with one goal line stand in a 27-22 victory over Amherst during the regular season, the top-seeded Wittenberg-Birnamwood Chargers squared off with the Falcons on Oct. 27 with a spot at Level 3 on the line.

In a game that saw both offenses struggle to move the ball as a combined 310 yards were gained by both offenses, it was the Chargers defense that came through once again.

Bonduel bows out to SMC in four-set thriller

Emotions ran high for both teams when No. 2 seed Bonduel faced off against No. 1 seed St. Mary Catholic in the first round of sectional volleyball action Oct. 26.

The Bears fell to the Zephyrs 3-1, but all four sets came down to the final moments with none of them being decided by more than five points.
