Menominee tribe honors departing legislators

The Menominee Tribal Legislature bid a warm farewell to three outstanding legislators who have dedicated their time and efforts to serving the tribe.

Douglas Cox, Rachel Fernandez, and Myrna Warrington were honored for their invaluable contributions during their tenure as legislators at the legislature’s Feb. 1 meeting.

Each outgoing legislator was presented with a proclamation, symbolizing deep appreciation and gratitude for their tireless efforts in advancing the welfare and interests of the Menominee.

Cox first Native appointed to DNR board

Gov. Tony Evers appointed Menominee Tribal Legislator Douglas Cox, who is also the tribe’s land management director, to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Board.

This is the first time an enrolled member of the Menominee tribe has been appointed to this board. Cox has more than 30 years of experience with the tribe and has served as the chairman for the Wisconsin Conservation Congress. He has a bachelor’s degree in biology and environmental science.

Delabreau elected to lead Menominee legislature

KESHENA — Joan Delabreau is the new leader of the Menominee Tribal Legislature after it voted 6-3 Sunday to elect her chairwoman over Legislator Ron Corn Sr. during the tribe’s annual reorganizational meeting.

Delabreau, who was the legislature’s vice chairwoman for the last two years, will become its leader for the fourth time.

Douglas Cox, who served as the legislature’s chairman for the last two years, will serve as vice chairman after a unanimous vote. Legislator Pershing Frechette will serve another term as secretary, also by unanimous vote.

KESHENA — A budget shortfall due to lagging casino profits and a partial government shutdown hit the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin hard in 2019, but the tribe still intends to move forward on several key building plans in the new year, according to tribal chairman Douglas Cox.

DNR deliver more sturgeon to Menominee

KESHENA — More than 200 people, including Wisconsin’s lieutenant governor, crowded the banks of Chickeney Creek on Wednesday to see the Department of Natural Resources release more than 30 sturgeon into the Wolf River.

Menominee give FEMA preliminary damage assessment

KESHENA — The Menominee Indian Tribe will ask Federal Emergency Management Agency for at least $59,000 in disaster recovery funds.

Representatives from FEMA were in northeast Wisconsin this week to conduct preliminary damage assessments for 17 different counties and several Native American tribes impacted by a severe storm in July.

Shawano and Menominee counties were among the affected areas FEMA planned to examine.
