Shawano School Board approves reopening plan

The Shawano School Board approved the district’s reopening plan Monday, with the current first week of school looking to be a hybrid model unless the county’s health risk drops or a newly forming committee determines otherwise, whichever comes first.

Under the hybrid model, students at Hillcrest Primary School and Olga Brener Intermediate School would be in school five days a week, but Shawano Community Middle School and Shawano Community High School students will attend two days a week while spending the other three days learning online.

Sacred Heart Catholic School believes it has everything it needs to have students in the classroom five days a week for the 2020-21 school year — although like other schools, it’s taking things one day at a time with the coronavirus.

COVID dismissed as cause for complaint uptick

A fistfight, even one in a cemetery over a remark about a deceased relative, wouldn’t normally be a big item of interest.

The Shawano County Sheriff’s Department responded to such an altercation in the Town of Wescott on July 29, according to George Lenzner, chief deputy. Two men, ages 41 and 67, admitted to the fight and were issued disorderly conduct citations, Lenzner added.

Emergency responders checked the older man’s injuries, but nothing serious was reported, Lenzner said.

Oconto County sheriff clarifies approach to mask mandate

Oconto County Sheriff Todd Skarban says his office supports individual actions to reduce the spread of COVID-19, but deputies will not be dispatched to respond to complaints if the only problem is that someone is not wearing a mask.

The sheriff issued a statement July 31 after Gov. Tony Evers declared that anyone age 5 or older must wear face coverings indoors or in enclosed spaces when non-family members are nearby.

Open enrollment concerns could affect the WBSD budget

The Wittenberg-Birnamwood School District has been working to address wage and open enrollment issues to help stabilize the budget for the 2020-2021 school year in the midst of uncertainty due to the uncertainty of the pandemic.

WBSD is planning to reopen this fall with the traditional face-to-face classroom environment. For those parents who want their children to use online education, the district is in partnership with EdOptions Academy based in Bloomington, Minnesota.

2020 Lena Lions Dairy Fest canceled

The Lena Lions Club has announced its annual Dairy Fest, which was scheduled for Sept. 12, is canceled because of restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic and concerns for the safety of workers and attendees.

Many of the vendors for the event have withdrawn, along with the school bands that normally march in the parade, the club said.

The announcement said the club apologizes for the inconvenience and would also like to thank all the sponsors of the event. Because the event is canceled, all the sponsors will receive refunds of their donations.

Brewers doubleheader vs. Cardinals postponed

Sunday's doubleheader between the Milwaukee Brewers and St. Louis Cardinals was postponed.

The news was reported by ESPN's Jeff Passan Saturday evening.

All three games of the series were postponed after multiple members of the Cardinals club tested positive for COVID-19. Makeup dates for the games have not been announced.

Milwaukee is set to play the Chicago White Sox for its next four games. The Brewers will host games on Monday and Tuesday before traveling to Chicago on Wednesday and Thursday.

Milwaukee is 3-3 on the season.

Brewers game postponed again

Saturday's game between the Milwaukee Brewers and St. Louis Cardinals was postponed because of more positive COVID-19 tests on the Cardinals' roster.

The news was reported by MLB Network's Jon Heyman and later confirmed by ESPN's Jeff Passan.

An announcement on Sunday's doubleheader between the two teams has not been made as of 12:20 p.m.

Whenever the Brewers do take the field again, they will do so without outfielder Lorenzo Cain, who opted out of the remainder of the 2020 season.

The organization made the announcement on social media just before noon.

Bay Conference to avoid nonconference play this fall

The Bay Conference voted Thursday to only play conference events this fall.

The decision to play only conference games was a 7-0 vote from conference athletic directors.

The conference also announced that all multi-team events, like quads, tournaments and invitationals, would be canceled this fall, with girls golf and cross-country events being possible exceptions.

The Milwaukee Brewers home opener against the St. Louis Cardinals has been postponed because of positive coronavirus tests.

MLB Network’s Jon Heyman was the first to report the news on Twitter. “Sources: Cardinals had positive tests, forcing postponement,” wrote Heyman in a follow-up tweet.

The news has been confirmed by several other outlets, including ESPN and CBS.
