Editor’s Note: Katie Hanke, a pharmacist at Gwidt Pharmacy in Wittenberg, reached out to the Wittenberg Enterprise & Birnamwood News about addressing some of the questions many customers were asking about dealing with COVID-19. Oconto Falls schools go virtual for at least four weeks

As Oconto Falls School District officials prepared to enter four weeks of all-virtual learning, the school board voted to complete the fall athletics program after hearing from parents and students anxious to maintain some semblance of normalcy during the COVID-19 detours.

The Oct. 7 vote came after the board heard a detailed report on the various ways high school and middle school athletes were being kept safe during competitions.

COVID-19 spread strains Oconto County health care system

Faced with what they described as “significant uncontrolled spread of COVID-19 in Oconto County,” the CEOs of the county’s two hospitals joined with the county’s Public Health Division to plead with residents to observe precautions against the virus. These precautions, as outlined in a joint press release, include wearing masks, practicing social distancing and following other guidelines regarding hygiene and quarantines.

Townsend Thanksgiving meal canceled

The annual 2020 Thanksgiving Day Dinner hosted by St. John Lutheran Church, Townsend, has been canceled because of ongoing concerns about the coronavirus pandemic.

Event coordinator Lynn Schmidt said this was a difficult but necessary decision.

Goodie bags to replace indoor Halloween events this year in Suring, Mountain

Concerns over COVID-19 have led the Mountain and Suring Area business associations to cancel their 2020 Indoor Kids’ Halloween events, the Sweet Street trick or treating at the Mountain Community Building and the Kids’ Halloween Party at the Red Maple Country Club.

While disappointed they won’t be holding the traditionally well-attended events, the two organizations are coming together to create Halloween goodie bags to send home with students attending school in the Suring School District. The goal is to put together 350 bags.

Trump seeks Monday hospital release UPDATE

White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany says she has tested positive for COVID-19. This comes days after President Donald Trump tested positive for the coronavirus.

McEnany says in a statement that she tested positive Monday morning and is experiencing no symptoms at this time. She spoke briefly with reporters Sunday evening, but says that no members of the White House press corps spent enough time around her to be considered close contacts.

City of Shawano closes facilities due to COVID-19

The city of Shawano is shutting down its facilities for five weeks due to surging COVID-19 numbers, though essential services will still be provided and voting will go forward on Nov. 3.

The decision was made at a special joint meeting Thursday of the finance committee and Shawano Common Council.

“I think as everybody knows, Shawano County has become a hot spot for COVID,” Mayor Ed Whealon said at the meeting.

Whealon said the Department of Public Works has been hit with the coronavirus.

Stockbridge-Munsee issues new COVID-19 health order

The Stockbridge-Munsee Community issued a new health order Tuesday due to the recent surge in COVID-19 cases that mandates face masks, social distancing, curfew and limits on gatherings.

The order is in effect until Nov. 30.

“The Stockbridge-Munsee Tribal Council recognizes this tribal community is also seeing a surge in positive COVID-19 infections like surrounding areas are experiencing,” Tribal President Shannon Holsey said in a statement.

Gresham volleyball, boys soccer seasons ended

Gresham’s volleyball team and co-op soccer team with Bowler had their seasons postponed when the Gresham School District announced it was going virtual.

Because of the school’s timeframe to reopen, the volleyball and boys soccer team’s seasons won’t resume this fall.

While in its virtual format, no practices or sporting events were going to be allowed at Gresham. The district plans on being virtual until at least Oct. 12, so the volleyball and boys soccer teams would only have one week to play games before postseason play starts.

Shawano School District, Gresham School going virtual

The Shawano School District will close classrooms and go 100% virtual for at least two weeks starting Tuesday due to the county’s surge in COVID-19 cases over the past week.

Hillcrest Primary School will close immediately for the rest of this week, due to the inability to provide staff coverage for the school, Superintendent Randi Anderson said in a letter to district parents.

Other Shawano schools will finish out the week.

There will be no school Monday while district staff converts their instruction to delivering it virtually starting on Tuesday.
