Gillett HS yearbook earns recognition

Gillett High School’s yearbook program has been named a Jostens 2020 National Yearbook Program of Excellence.

Jostens describes itself a the leading producer of yearbooks and student-created content. The Program of Excellence recognizes engaging yearbooks that reflect a broad representation of the student body while helping students develop 21st century skills such as communication, collaboration, and information and communication technologies literacy.

Hillside Thanksgiving dinner set for Nov. 25

Hillside Assembly of God is moving forward with its 30th annual community Thanksgiving dinner, albeit with some precautionary adjustments for the COVID-19 pandemic.

The church plans to serve turkey and ham with all the trimmings from 3:30-6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 25, at its fellowship hall, 5890 State Highway 22 West, Gillett.

The free dinner is offered to anyone who would enjoy the feeling of being a part of a large family. Delivery is available for homebound residents in the Gillett, Suring, Cecil or Oconto Falls areas.

Lambeau Field to continue indefinite hold on hosting fans for game days

Due to the continued high levels of COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations in the Green Bay area and across Wisconsin, the Green Bay Packers are continuing the indefinite hold on hosting fans for games at Lambeau Field this season.

In order to host fans, the area will need to see a significant improvement in the rate of hospitalizations, as well as in the community infection and positivity rates. This is based on recommendations from community health care and public health officials.

Packers' Dillon tests positive for coronavirus

The Green Bay Packers reported Monday that a player has tested positive for the coronavirus.

According to multiple reports, that player is running back AJ Dillon, who was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Packers officials said all player meetings Monday would be conducted virtually. The player who tested positive has self-quarantined.

This marks the first time a Packers player has tested positive during the season. Green Bay (5-2) has a short week before playing at San Francisco (4-4) on Thursday night.

Wisconsin football team has 22 positive COVID-19 cases

Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez says the total number of positive COVID-19 cases within the Badgers’ football program has increased to 22.

Alvarez told ESPN’s “College GameDay” on Saturday that 12 football players and 10 staffers have tested positive. Alvarez said school officials would decide Tuesday whether to go ahead with the ninth-ranked Badgers' scheduled Sept. 7 home game with Purdue.

“We’re still having additions in our cases, and that’s something we’ve got to get our arms around and control it,” Alvarez said.

COVID-19 spike continues in Oconto County

The number of positive tests for COVID-19 in Oconto County surged past 2,000 last weekend, and nine more deaths have been recorded during the month of October for a total of 14.

Health & Human Services Director Mike Reimer told the Oconto County Board on Oct. 22 that about 5% of the county’s population, or one in 20, has contracted the virus since the first case was confirmed March 27.

Schools grapple with virtual versus in-person learning

The Gillett School Board urged its administrators to do all they can to keep in-person classes in session during their Oct. 22 regular monthly meeting, after being briefed on two options for adjusting the schedule during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Gillett returned from a two-week period of all-virtual learning on Oct. 13, and the Oconto Falls School District is in the third week of learning from home, as local educators deal with rising cases among students and staff.

COVID testing scheduled at Doty Town Hall

At the request of Oconto County Public Health and Emergency Management, the Wisconsin National Guard will be providing free drive-through COVID-19 nasal swab testing in northern Oconto County on four occasions over the next six weeks, starting Tuesday.

Testing will take place at the Doty Town Hall, 14899 County Road T, from noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27; 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Nov. 10; and noon-8 p.m. Nov. 24 and Dec. 8.

UW study: School sports don’t increase COVID-19 cases

A study conducted by the Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health concluded participation in high school sports in Wisconsin has not led to an increase in COVID-19 infections among high school student-athletes.
