Chelberg picked as top male cross country runner

Shawano Community High School senior Will Chelberg was named the Bay Conference boys runner of the year for the 2023 season.

Teammates Ethan Onesti and Andon Chelberg, both seniors, joined Will Chelberg in receiving first team all-conference honors.

Junior Josiah Kruel was named to the second team.

Shawano sophomore Bailey Hendricks was named to the all-conference first team on the girls side, with seniors Grace Chelberg and Lilly Guenther picking up second team honors.

Sophomores Maci Beyer and Anabelle Schroeder received honorable mention status.

Pulaski soccer season ends in sectional semifinals

Heavy rain hampered play as seven goals were scored in Pulaski’s soccer sectional semifinal loss to West Bend West on Oct. 26.

The No. 4 Red Raiders lost 4-3 to the top-seeded West Bend team. West scored twice in each half, while Pulaski had one goal in the first half and two in the second.

“The weather made for a challenging evening for both squads,” Pulaski coach Jeff Schneider said.

The Spartans jumped on the board early with an unassisted goal from Franklin Kunfira in the seventh minute, and the Red Raiders were forced to play catch up for most of the match.

Fresh off a very good regular season that saw the Red Raiders go 13-6-1, including 5-4 in conference play, it was time for Pulaski to kick off their postseason as they welcomed in the 13th-seeded Slinger Owls on Oct. 17. A sectional team a season ago, the Owls are not an ordinary 13 seed, and they showed that throughout the first half as things were tied 0-0 after one half of play.

In the second half, Slinger broke through with a goal from Nick Otto off a direct free kick in the 43rd minute.

Soccer teams prepare for postseason play

High school regional soccer began this week as the regular season drew to a close the week before.

Pulaski 13, Manitowoc Lincoln 0

The Red Raiders jumped on the Ships early and often to post a 13-0 victory Oct. 10. Pulaski erupted offensively for eight goals in the first half before responding with five more in the second half to post the win. What makes this win even more surprising is they accomplished this feat in just 60 minutes as state mercy rules kick in at eight goals or more after the 60-minute mark.

Shawano closes out perfect soccer week

With the 2023 soccer season coming to a close, the Shawano Hawks are looking to be at their best in an effort to make some noise in the postseason.

Despite dealing with some injuries in the middle of the season, Shawano never wavered and continued to battle as they are currently sitting at 8-9-1 this season. This was a great week for the Hawks program as they posted a 2-0 record on the pitch and secured a pair of Bay Conference wins in the process.

The Red Raiders continued their terrific start to their 2023 season as they have run their record to (9-4-1) and (1-2) in Fox River Classic Conference play.

Things didn’t start the way Pulaski would have liked as they dropped a tough 1-0 contest to Bay Port on Tuesday. Michael Schreiner provided the lone goal for the Pirates, and it came just three minutes into the game.

In a game that featured two teams going in different directions, the Shawano Hawks traveled to Pulaski to take on the Red Raiders in non-conference soccer action Sept. 16. Even with the Hawks playing shorthanded and missing five starters, they continue to give it their all for 80 minutes and put forth some strong efforts.
