Oconto County 4-H members go to summer academy

In June, youths from across Wisconsin gathered at the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus for the annual Summer Academy event, hosted by UW-Madison Extension’s Positive Youth Development Institute and 4-H.

Youths had the opportunity to build and learn skills to reach goals and plan for the future. Youth participants explored careers, college and other topics of interest through interactive workshops. They developed connections with other youths and adults through small and large groups activities.

4-H clubs collect over 5,000 books for organizations

Shawano County’s 4-H youth leaders challenged all county 4-H clubs to collect and donate new and gently used books.

Clubs demonstrated extreme generosity and competitiveness as they donated over 5,000 books.

Clubs were given March and April to collect books. The club that donated the most books per member would be declared the winner and awarded an ice cream sundae party. Competition was fierce with many lead changes over March and April.

Wolf River 4-H was the winner of the book drive, boasting more than 59 books donated per enrolled 4-H member.

Shawano teen attends National 4-H Conference

Shawano 4-H member Taya Jannusch recently attended the 2024 National 4-H Conference in Washington, D.C. She was chosen as one of only nine youth delegates in Wisconsin.

The conference annually brings 4-H youths and adults from around the nation to work towards strengthening and expanding the 4-H Youth Development program at the local, state and national levels. The conference is the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture’s premier youth development opportunity to engage youths in developing recommendations for the 4-H Youth Development program.

Local Oconto and Marinette County 4-H programs are recipients of a donation from local author J.E. Edwards, the author of “How to Make a Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich: 15 Steps to accomplishing just about anything in business and life.”

Edwards chooses and donates a portion of her book sales to various youth-serving organizations. Local 4-H programs were chosen to be gifted a portion of her sales from February through May 2020.

State grand champion steer raised by Gillett youth

GILLETT – A young man from Gillett took home grand champion honors for his lightweight dairy steer at the Wisconsin State Fair in August.

Brandin Bjelland’s steer won first place in the market registered dairy division in the junior beef cattle competition.

“The most exciting part about it was after you win, you get to stay another three extra days with everyone else who won,” Bjelland said.

Aimee Elkins hired as Oconto-Marinette 4-H coordinator

OCONTO — The University of Wisconsin Division of Extension has announced Aimee Elkins started August 14 as the 4-H program coordinator for Oconto and Marinette counties. With over 500 youth involved in 4-H in this two-county area, UW-Extension is looking to provide leadership to grow the program and reach even more youth in the future.

Rides are back and the Oconto County Youth Fair is on

The rides are back, and so is the fun of the Oconto County Youth Fair, Aug. 15-18.

For a variety of reasons, the familiar midway and rides were not part of the festivities in Gillett’s Zippel Park last August. This year the Fair Board has contracted with Tri State Amusement to provide a carnival at the fair.

Tri-State Carnival Mega-Bands, wristbands that allow unlimited rides all Thursday-Sunday, have been on sale before the Fair for $45 at the Peshtigo National Bank branches in Gillett and Oconto Falls. They will be available at the fair for $50.

If you’re anywhere near my age and you grew up on a farm like I did, you probably belonged to a 4-H club. The 4-H club — in my day, anyway — was an educational/recreational/occupational organization that gave us farm kids a chance to interact with other kids in our general neighborhoods on a more or less regular basis.
