Semi catches fire, closes down Highway 29

State Highway 29 westbound traffic was rerouted at the state Highway 22 exit, avoiding a semi-tractor trailer that caught fire at 3 a.m. May 29. The rerouting and congestion continued on Main Street in Shawano because Route 29 westbound lanes remained closed. (Greg Mellis | NEW Media)

Traffic headaches got a little more inconvenient on state Highway 29 on May 29 when a semi-tractor trailer caught fire on the highway near the exit to state Highway 22.

According to Lt. Chris Madle with the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department, the semi was traveling westbound on Highway 29 hauling wood chips when one of the tires caught fire. The fire then spread to the rest of the vehicle.

Crews were still cleaning up the aftermath as of 11:30 a.m., according to Madle, with the tow crews arriving to remove the vehicle from the road at that time. The westbound lanes were closed down for over eight hours due to both the crash and the Department of Transportation’s road reconstruction project for the highway.
