TOWNSEND: Charles A. Smith harvested 120 bushels of potatoes from 4 acres of his farm. He planted what is called the “Millionaire Potatoe” and gathered 44 bushels from it. That‘s the kind of soil that makes Oconto County famous as one of the best agricultural districts in the state.

SPRUCE: When Martin Rasmussen went out to his barn he discovered a strange horse eating generously of his hay. It had been tied up and a buggy stood nearby with no driver in sight. The driver was later discovered sleeping under some hay, being one of the “husky farmers of Oconto Falls.”

OCONTO: Major W.B. Hall, Oconto, who recently received his discharge from the military service, has spent Monday afternoon in town, and made a very pleasant call at this office. Major Hall had considerable experience in the engagements in France, and as a result is justly proud of the work of the American troops, some of which he had to command.

OCONTO FALLS: George H. Jones and Franklin Delmer are engaged in painting the new residence building recently erected by Julius Krause on Washington Avenue. They will also paint W.J. Munsert’s new home on Franklin avenue .

GILLETT: Quite a large gathering of men were busily engaged yesterday in raising the timbers for the new barn on the Art Connel farm southwest of the village. This barn is somewhat larger than the one which was recently destroyed by fire and will be better equipped also than the former one.

GILLETT: Mrs. Ray W. Spring of Oshkosh will lecture Saturday, Oct. 19, and Sunday, Oct. 20, at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the home of Wesley Schaal. Her subjects for these lectures are “The Temple of God,” “The Three States of Consciousness” and “The Nature of True Prayer.” A basket lunch will be served at noon on Sunday.

COLEMAN: Oscar Cudnohfski is recovering from an infection in his hand received when he was cut by a corn knife.

LENA: Tuesday evening, Oct. 17, Miss Betty Froelich celebrated her 16th birthday with a surprise party held at Mrs. Marion Blahnik’s home.

KLONDIKE: A group of neighbors assisted at the barn raising bee at the John McDermott farm Saturday.

GILLETT: The tavern owned and operated by Adolph Ziegler has been sold to Emil Dietz of the town of Gillett.

STILES: The new bridge over the Oconto River at Stiles, which has been in the process of construction since early summer, was opened to traffic for the first time Friday, Oct. 7.

OCONTO FALLS: A fire of an unknown origin completely destroyed the old unoccupied Fuller home east of the city.

GILLETT: Herbert F. Wildt, 55, died when the car in which he was a passenger collided with a truck.

OCONTO: A car driven by Patricia Beschta, 17, Lena, struck a cow on County Road A.

OCONTO: Two young men were arrested after attempting to steal $50 worth of white birch logs. The men were about to drive a pickup load of logs from a logging operation in the town of Doty when a company employee stoped them.

OCONTO FALLS: Mid Central Tool will place a 20,000-square-foot building on the land adjoining their present plant on Highland Drive.

CECIL: Leo Bahr, well-known on the agricultural scene in the Cecil area, has signed on as a salesman with Ag-E-Quip in Lena.

LENA: Demotech Inc., an independent financial stability analysis firm in Columbus, Ohio, is pleased to announce that Maple Valley Mutual Insurance Company has earned a financial stability rating of A.

OCONTO FALLS: Pete Mann started Monday as the new administrator of the city of Oconto Falls.

GILLETT: Robert John Schuettpelz was born Oct. 15 at Bellin Hospital. He weighed 7 pounds, 7 ounces and measured 20 inches long. His parents are Mark and Jodi Schuettpelz.

GILLETT: Dawn Kohn, 52, died Oct. 12 at her home. She was employed by Owens Fine Foods from 1989 until the time of her illness.

OCONTO FALLS: The new Burger King on Highland Drive celebrated its grand opening this week.

MAPLE VALLEY: The Maple Valley School House on County Road A will be the site of the 55th anniversary celebration for Maple Valley 4-H on Oct. 31.

LITTLE SUAMICO: Just like the rest of Little Suamico, St. John’s Lutheran Church on County Road J is growing. On Sept. 26, church members gathered after services to break ground for an 11,000-square-foot addition to the church.

ABRAMS: The Abrams Haunted House has reopened in the basement of the old St. Louis Church after an eight-year absence. The group originally used the aging Abrams Town Hall, which was torn down in 2001 to make room for a new hall.

OCONTO COUNTY: The Oconto County Board of Supervisors announced it will take about five years to plan for a new jail facility in the county.

OCONTO FALLS: The Oconto Falls School District is looking at ways to improve its students’ ACT scores after viewing disappointing results from 2009. The ACT scores of Oconto Falls students fell below the state average.
