New law to prohibit ATV/snowmobile trespassing on public land goes into effect.Allstate Insurance agency in Stevens Point is designated as a Premier Service Agency for 2009. Owner is Eric Nier.

In honor of the 25th anniversary of the Crawdad-a-thon, the Crawdad Chili Contest was held at Rachel’s Roadside Bar and Grill. Top honors went to Leah Szczech for best smelling, Brad Jorgensen for best tasting and Eric Sickler for most unique ingredient.

Howard Wagner of Wagner Shell is building a new gas station/convenience store/McDonald’s on corner of state Highway 29 and U.S. Highway 45. Sunday, Oct. 8, the body of Mary J. Van Grinsven, 67, was found in the township of Hartland. She had been missing since Sept. 9. Mielke Fine Arts Center in Shawano is expected to finish expansion project by early December.

Marriage: Jamie Hersant and Jeremy Luber, both from Wittenberg, married July 8.

Three Hatley teens hurt in a two-car accident. WB board signs contract with support staff. Corina Jo Norrbom, daughter of David and Kay Norrbom, Eland, graduated first in her class from Washington University in St. Louis with a doctor of medicine degree. Randy Berndt is hired to be the new Tigerton Main Street manager.

John Spranger III, 18, Eland, is heading to the World Finals at Lake Havasu City, Arizona, for the Midwest Water Cross tour.

Truck hits train in Birnamwood. Harold Neill escaped injury by jumping from his 1953 Ford truck, which was traveling at 45 mph. His load of logs broke loose, damaging the length of the train and derailing it.

Obit: John Hoffman, 15, Tigerton, was killed when he was run over by a tractor trailer pulling 20 high school students on a hay ride.

Births: A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Jakubek, Sept. 30, Wittenberg. A son was born Oct. 3 to Mr. and Mrs. George Nillisen, Wittenberg. A daughter was born Oct. 8 to Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Hapke, Wittenberg. A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Walter Heck; Mr. and Mrs. Harold Kusserow, Wittenberg, are maternal grandparents.

A law providing for the recording of farm names is passed. For 25 cents, you can give your farm a name. Monthly social security benefits under old-age and survivor’s insurance were in force Sept. 30, 1946, for 3,931 men, women and children in the area served by Green Bay.
