Five Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School baseball players were honored by the Central Wisconsin Conference-East Division following the spring season.

Seniors Austin Worzalla and Austin Rekow each earned spots on the first team. Senior Bryce Zoromski made the second team along with sophomore Chase Krull and freshman Ian Salvesen.

Worzalla and Rekow starred on both the mound and at the plate for the Chargers.

Worzalla posted a .456 batting average for the entire season, driving in 21 runs on 26 hits. He also was hit by six pitches and drew six walks to help lead to an on-base percentage of .535. He scored 22 runs.

On the hill, the senior logged 38 innings across eight games and seven starts. He picked up three wins and had an earned run average of 2.57. Worzalla struck out 26 batters while walking just six.

“Making first team as a senior means to me that all the work and hours that I put in the years before paid off my senior year to help and try to make my team win,” said Worzalla.

Rekow pitched 33⅓ innings for Witt-Birn across eight games and seven starts. He earned half of the team’s 10 wins on the season and posted a 2.10 ERA while striking out 35 batters.

At the plate, Rekow put together a .421 batting average and .500 on-base percentage. He drove in a team-leading 23 runs on 24 hits and also scored 11 times.

“It means a lot,” said Rekow of the honor. “I’ve played high school ball for four years and to me it’s a huge accomplishment. It was something I was striving for and I finally got it.”

Zoromski led the Chargers with 30 runs scored. He had a .356 batting average and got on base at a .480 clip.

The senior had 21 hits and 11 walks while driving in four runs.

“To me, making the second team feels like a great accomplishment,” said Zoromski. “From not being able to play baseball my junior year and only having one year of experience on varsity prior to this year, this really is an accomplishment I won’t forget. This was definitely one of my goals as a senior to make one of the all-conference teams.”

Krull earned his second team spot primarily for his work at the plate. He had a .339 batting average and .400 on-base percentage to go along with 19 RBIs and 15 runs scored. He led the team with 10 extra base hits, including all three of the team’s home runs.

Krull also pitched 4⅔ innings between three games.

Salvesen was Witt-Birn’s top hitter with a .492 batting average and .565 on-base percentage. All 29 of his hits were singles.

The freshman drove in 17 runs and scored 22 times.

“Having all-conference honors this year helps me a lot with my confidence heading into upcoming seasons,” said Salvesen.

Witt-Birn finished 10-9 for the season, including an 8-4 record in the CWC-East for a third-place finish. The Chargers earned a playoff win over Manawa before being eliminated by Amherst.
