The new Gillett school superintendent is coming to town from White Lake, where Nathan Hanson has been superintendent for the past three school years.

The school board approved Hanson’s appointment at a special meeting Jan. 29 after interviewing candidates at two special meetings the previous week.

A statement released by the board Jan. 30 said Hanson has “a wealth of experience and a proven track record.”

“Dr. Hanson’s dedication to fostering a positive and engaging learning environment aligns seamlessly with the values of the Gillett community,” the statement said.

Hanson was hired for the White Lake position in 2021, his first superintendent job after serving as director of personalized learning in the Shawano School District. He previously held various positions in Plymouth, Tomahawk, Merrill and Antigo.

“The District is confident that Dr. Hanson’s vision and expertise will contribute significantly to Gillett’s educational programs’ ongoing success and positive development,” the board statement said.

Hanson’s predecessor, Todd Hencsik, took a leave of absence after he was diagnosed with myelofibrosis, a form of bone marrow cancer, and Wayne Johnson was hired as interim superintendent. Johnson stayed on as superintendent for the 2023-24 school year after Hencsik died last May.

Olson’s first day on the job is July 1, the start of the academic fiscal year.
