The Town of Brazeau has begun the process of joining the Gillett Joint Municipal Court, the 10th town to become part of the court operated by the city of Gillett.

Established in 2011, the court currently consists of the municipalities of the city of Gillett, as well as the towns of Breed, Doty, Gillett, Green Valley, Lakewood, Mountain, Riverview, Townsend, and Underhill. Good-cause hearings are generally held on the first Wednesday of every month starting at 2:30 p.m., followed by initial appearances at 3 p.m., with trials set accordingly.

During its June 1 meeting, the Gillett City Council approved Brazeau’s request to join the court. City attorney Alex Sickel said the next step is up to the town.

“They would have to adopt an ordinance that matches the City of Gillett ordinance for municipal court; that’s what all the other municipalities have done, and they would have to adopt resolutions and provide those to the appropriate state agencies,” Sickel said. “That all has to be done by the Town of Brazeau, so all this is contingent upon them doing that.”

The agreement includes a $150 annual payment to the city, plus $25 a ticket or $60 for cases that go to trial, he said.
