Two people were questioned Feb. 1, and one was arrested, after their suspicious behavior led Oconto High School administrators to lock down the facility.

Superintendent Emily Miller said in a statement that a staff member reported seeing the two individuals in the back of the building near the rear entrance.

“One individual went up onto the roof with a backpack and then, within minutes, returned to the ground, he still had the backpack,” Miller wrote. “These two individuals then left the HS campus in a vehicle.”

Administrators decided to evacuate the high school and lock down all three district schools. Police were notified at about 2:20 p.m.

Detective Lt. Nicole Crocker said the Brown County Bomb Squad was consulted as a safety precaution. Within an hour of the initial complaint, the suspects were identified and located, and a 24-year-old man was taken into custody. A 33-year-old man and 26-year-old woman were also questioned. The case has been referred to the Oconto County District Attorney’s office.

“It has been determined that nothing was left on the roof, and there is no danger for our staff and students,” Miller wrote.

Crocker described it as an isolated incident and said there was no continued threat to the schools.

“I would like to commend our administration, staff, teachers, and students for their prompt response and cooperation during today’s incident,” Miller wrote. “The Oconto Police Department and the Oconto County Sheriff’s Department responded quickly and took control of the situation right away. We are so fortunate to have these individuals in place to keep our community safe.”
